Personal Statement
School and academics have always been my priority. No matter my other commitments, I always make sure to have time to complete my school work well. Still, when I signed up for a once-a-week field hockey program with Windy City Field Hockey in the fifth grade, I had no idea how important the sport would become for me. In sixth grade, when I padded up to try being my club's "goalie for a week," I never imagined I would be putting on all that equipment every single time I played going forward, from recreational league to nationally ranked travel team to now as I work to play at the college level.
This past year, I was lucky to enter Phillips Exeter Academy as a freshman. To my surprise, I made the varsity field hockey team and even started every game. After the season ended, I began playing with another club located near my school - Seacoast United - and made their U19 travel squad.
Playing in high school and at the club travel level forced me to advance my skills, for which I am grateful. When I began as a goalkeeper, I constantly struggled to step off the line and talk to the defense. I realized that I needed more of a "presence" on the field. I talked to my coaches, and with their help, I found the confidence to be more aggressive and to be much more vocal, which has helped me and my teams tremendously. I enjoy practice and am comfortable seeking help from my coaches and teammates alike, and I know these things will help me continue to improve.
I am enjoying the entire recruiting process, learning about many amazing schools and the academic and field hockey programs they offer. While field hockey is very important to me, any school I attend myst also have strong academics and a lot of extracurricular opportunities. For example, at Exeter, I write for the school newspaper and want to continue looking for chances to write and express myself in college, both in the net and around campus.
