As a freshman at my high school I lettered in three varsity sports including field hockey. I am the fifth of six children and have lived in many different locations prior to my father retiring from the Marine Corps. All my older siblings made varsity sports as a freshman, I knew I had to step up my game when it came to my freshman year.
Field hockey interested me when I was in first grade because my two older sisters had been playing for quite a while. The love for the game quickly grew and I started club field hockey in sixth grade. When I started with this club I quickly learned that I had to prove myself in ways that the other girls didn’t. I was not a student athlete at the same school as the coaches and I did not know my teammates. I feel this was the turning point in my dedication to hockey, to prove myself I had to work harder than anyone else. This culminated with a NIT championship in 2015.
At the beginning of my freshman year when I was 14 I had to switch clubs because I made the varsity basketball team and the practices conflicted with my club team. At first, I was scared and not sure what to expect but quickly realized that my work-ethic and experience from my previous club catapulted me to a starting forward position on the U19 roster. This entire experience has taught me that to achieve the goals for myself and my team I must take responsibility in all aspects of conduct, training and execution. When you get knocked down get right back up because all your hard work will pay off.
