Personal Statement
Before playing field hockey, I was a goalie in soccer. Everyone knew me as Sarah Hafley, the soccer goalie. Near the end of middle school and my freshmen year, soccer didn’t make me happy anymore. I was in a dark place and I was very unhappy with my sports and myself. Also, I went through many set backs. Not only did I have a knee injury in middle school, but I was also diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease, and my father left. Field hockey saved my life. Without field hockey and my love for the game, I don’t know where I would be. When I joined travel, it felt as if my life took a 180. I was happy and proud, I was loved and supported like I never have been before. This made me gain a confidence in myself that was never there before.
Through the big change in myself, I saw big changes in my life and athletic career as well. Getting awarded 6A 2nd Team All-Region in Virginia Beach as a Sophomore was when I really starting believing in myself that I could do it. I can go to college for field hockey and be great. I believe that I not only have the talent and skill to be a collegiate athlete, but the passion, leadership, hard work, character, and dedication to compete at the college level. I’m no longer known as the fun, involved in school, girl on the soccer team. I am known as the nice, fun, involved in school, field hockey goalie, Sarah Hafley.
