Personal Statement

I am confident that receiving admissions to college will be a momentous occasion for my family. I have an interest that is so meaningful that without sharing it you would not know who I am as a person and the impact that this interest has had on my life.

The interest in football at a young age has impacted my life by developing my character, leadership skills, social skills, and goal focused directions.  I have found that playing football truly has given me a direction in life and has kept me out of situations and peer pressures that could have become a problem in my future endeavors. There are three reasons why football is meaningful to my life.

First, character building has been one of the experiences that have helped to shape my decision in choosing academics and community service over so many other distracting choices. Early, I was taught that character measures a man. As a result, I have discovered that my sportsman like conduct is observed on the field and in the classroom.  I believe that my disposition in class is reflective of my character as a serious student and how others see me. I believe this disposition will be transformed into my career as an ethical and prudent social worker.

Secondly, my social skills are excellent.. I attribute these skills to learning to effectively communicate with coaches, team members, and students. Also as a loyal person when I make a commit to someone or something I will be there to fulfill my obligations to the person or to complete volunteer services. I can be counted on to do what I said I would do related to the work. This attribute is important to me because I find that it measures me as a  young man in all other areas of my life.  I find that this quality makes me proud because of the impact that it has on my interpersonal relationships at school, at home and in my community service.

Thirdly, football has helped me to avoid certain people and places that would have caused me to become involved in behaviors that were not encouraged by my mother. For example, as I grew up with a group of friends that were good kids when they were younger but as they got to high school they started to follow crowds that were acting out and they started ditching school. Although, they were my friends I  chose to focus on my grades so that I could remain eligible to play football and do well in school. Playing a sport like football was a big help to me in avoiding peer pressure and giving me something to work towards so that  my motivation would increase and I could continue to develop my athletic skills and improve my study habits.

Finally, my aspiration is to continue to build on my qualities of leadership, character, and interpersonal relationships. I would first attribute these aspirations to my single parent, my mother, and secondly to the sport of football.   I can fulfill my dreams and aspirations and look like the leader that I can become for myself, my family, and my community
