Personal Statement

My name is Micah McVaney.  I spent my red-shirt freshman year at The University of NM.  I had an amazing experience and loved my teammates, coaches and the school.  However, I am not a NM resident and the tuition was quite expensive.  I know now I am definitely a D1 player and did not want to wait another year for a scholarship, so I have come back to S CA and will play this next fall campaign at the JUCO level.

I have chosen Pierce College to play, after meeting with head Coach Sabolic and the DC-Coach Hughes.  Both coaches have a high level of belief in my talent and are confident I can play at the D1 level.  They intend to play me at the Mike position but also intend to showcase my skills at the Will and Rush positions as well.

My size is 6'2" and I am 232 lbs.  I train relentlessly in the weight room and conditioning, while meeting with my LB specific trainer-Steven Thompson of Linebacker Enforcer Academy 2-3 x weekly as well.

Training

  • Mike Baab (former NFL lineman) Strength
  • 3 years
  • Mike has focused on Micah's core strength and taught him proper lifting technique but also has applied functional application with various drills as well as including area athletes to do group sessions to create a very competitive training environment.
  • Position/Skill Calvin Lowry
  • 2 years
  • Calvin began with creating a solid foundation of footwork and focused the efforts on cornerback. But, the size kept coming and that effort has gone from mostly man cover skills to zone reads. Therehas always been and continues to be a 2-3 x weekly session in the offseason on footwork, backpedal, opeing hips, reaction bursts and staying on top, anticipating ball andfinishing, while staying low to not give up my power. Being tall makes it harder but will pay off.
  • Speed-Xcelleration Matt Neel & Judd Linehardt
  • 2 years
  • Triple extension and moving my hips forward, hand placement, gaining top speed and running under control and taking proper angles. These guys are very technical but, my shuttle and 40 times continue to improve. I expect to break 4.0 in the 5-10=5 shuttle and run a sub 4.6 40 by 5/2014.
