My football experience has been short AND incredibly fulfilling. I only started playing football in June of this year. I've been a competitive soccer player since I was little and was selected for the Colorado Rapids Academy when I was 10. Academy players must agree to not play other sports so I pursued my favorite sport while having to give up lacrosse, basketball and baseball. I have played 10-11 months of soccer each year after that. For a fun change of pace I would go to the local high school a few times a year with my dad to kick field goals. I felt like I was good at kicking and in the back of my mind it was something I hoped to try some day.
Fast forward to my senior year. I feel very blessed to attend Regis Jesuit High School. It's a great school with an environment in which the students, teachers and coaches really care about one another. Regis also has a great sports culture. As a competitive athlete, I was hungry to play for my school and challenge myself in a new way. I decided to join the football team and discovered how much I love the brotherhood of my teammates, training hard all week, and the build up to Friday night. I also love the opportunity to be counted on by teammates to do my job well. In soccer I have always been the guy that takes the penalty kicks for my teams and have converted 27 of 29 over the past 7 years. Kicking field goals, like taking penalty kicks, requires calmness, focus and enjoyment of performing during the big moments.
I won the punting position before the season started; however, Regis already had an excellent 3-year starting kicker. By mid-season, based on my performance in practice, I was asked to kick in the second half of games. I won the starting kicking role for the last game of our COVID-shortened season and kicked the game winner to advance us to the playoffs. In our playoff game I was named starter again and kicked two field goals including a Regis record 49-yarder.
With the season just ending, I am excited to continue focused training for my new passion and craft and can't wait to compete and help my team win at the college level. I'm a strong student and plan to study business as I've enjoyed understanding and building businesses for as long as I can remember.
I attended my first showcase for kickers in December 2020 (Kohl's Texas Regional). I was one of only 4 kickers out of 128 kickers attending with a field goal score of 10+, kickoff distance of 70+ yards and hang time of 3.80+ seconds.
