Personal Statement
I want to attend a top university as an athlete and graduate with a degree in a challenging academic area. My goal beyond college is to be a pilot as well as to remain involved in football and baseball but flying, like sports, is dependent upon other things beyond just grades – there are physical requirements which could change overnight. To make sure I get the best out of my college education and have a back-up plan for sports and flying I am looking at studying business or perhaps business with a minor in sports marketing. However, I am also looking at schools with military ROTC programs or a service academy in which I can enter a military flying program after graduation.
College football is the next level and I have always loved rising to every level of play when it comes to sports. Past coaches have described me as the “most coachable” player they have ever had. When I first got my kicking coach he told me I had great natural talent but that I had to re-learn how I was kicking the ball. This resulted in the distance of my kicks regressing in the short term and I was tempted to continue the way I had been kicking but I trusted my coach’s judgement and over time I saw that my kicking was getting better because of the changes. I know that at whatever level I play I will exceed the level of play expected of me – I want to be coached by the best and play against the best, so I can become one of the best.
Admittedly, I have never played in a championship game, but I know what it feels like to beat a team that is better than us or to make a big come back in the final seconds of the 4th quarter and I live for those moments. football was my choice and because of that I put my heart into this sport not for someone else but for me. I know what it means to be a team player, I know what it means to earn your position on the field or how to act when not selected, and I know the importance of others on the field around me. I am a true team player not because it sounds like the right thing to say but because I understand that my role isn’t just to play well but to inspire my teammates to play their best no matter where I find myself on the field.
I appreciate your consideration
Sincerely,
Julian Hogan
