Personal Statement
One of the most pivotal points in my life was when my grandfather, who was a police officer, was killed in the line of duty. My grandfather was more than the leader of our household. He was the pillar of many communities – not just the one he served. He was able to teach me many valuable lessons before his untimely demise. He taught me to be courageous and never compromise my integrity. He taught me the measure of a man is what he does when no one is looking. So I always do what is right, kind, honest and helpful. I’m known for having an awesome rapport with teachers, coaches and classmates. I train when no one is looking because I am a leader on and off the field. He taught me to be dependable, hardworking and loyal. I’m always the first one to the field and the last one to leave. I’m loyal to my teammates, coaches and school. I know that I represent them and they represent me at all times. I know that I’m able to bond with my team by building trust and being transparent.
This is not an easy subject for me to talk about but it has shaped who I am at my core. I know that sharing this part of me allows others to understand why I strive to be the very best. My grandfather taught me to be a playmaker by using my speed, size and critical thinking skills. I’ve always been fast with an athletic build. I’m 6 feet, weigh 175lbs and run a 4.57 second 40-yard dash. I’ve always possessed the ability to be able to read the field. This allows me to make the necessary adjustments to my offensive or defensive strategy. I have the ability to play both sides of the ball. My grandfather always said you have two ears for listening and one mouth for talking which means I should listen twice as much as I talk. I feel this makes me very coachable. I have a great relationship with the coaches from my high school and travel team. I’m always willing to take direction, make changes and execute the plays the coaches are giving me.
My grandfather’s legacy includes many aspects such as mentoring children, helping the community and caring for my family. He died protecting the people of our community but his legacy didn’t die with him. It lives on through me. I actively mentor a “little brother” and participate in many community enrichment volunteer programs. My grandfather groomed me to assume the role of man of the house at a young age. It is very important to me that I provide a positive atmosphere for my mom, younger sister, grandmother and aunt. Although I haven’t decided on my major, there are two things I’m very passionate about. Those two things are football and helping people. I know there are a lot of players with talent. I’m positive that none of them have as much heart, drive and passion as me. I will not be outworked in practice and I refuse to give up on the field. If you give me 1% of your trust, I will earn the other 99%.
