Personal Statement of Riley McClendon
I’m Riley McClendon, a senior at Leo Catholic High School in Chicago, Illinois. Several experiences have shaped who I am. Growing up with a mother that was the first African-American woman Lieutenant of the Cook County Sheriff Department in Chicago, and a father that is a teacher, both instilled in me leadership and determination, as well as the importance of a obtaining a great education. My parents along with my high school football coach have helped me to develop into a young man by shaping my character and keeping a positive attitude that drives me to do my absolute best everyday. Experiencing the death of my mother during my sophomore year of high school impacted me emotionally and academically. Remembering her strength as she fought cancer for several years until her last day of life has encouraged me to persevere, face challenges head on and to strive to be successful everyday. Adjusting to life without her has been difficult, but with the support of my father, fellow football and track teammates, friends and family I can proudly say that I am achieving again both academically as well as athletically. The deaths of my two cousins of whom I was close, have also made me thank God everyday for his protection and blessings.
I have ambitions for college, which are to excel in and rank at the top of my classes. I plan to utilize my leadership skills both on campus as well as in the sports arena. I would love to represent your University with my determination and excellence of going above and beyond to show the outstanding product that your university will produce in me that will effect positive change that will make society a better place.
I will utilize the education that I have received thus far as well as knowledge I have obtained from two great parents, the spirit of love, patience, faithfulness, and self-control to effect the world in a great way. The education that I will receive through attending university will prepare me intellectually and emotionally to be a productive Adult, Husband, and Father in the future.
