My name is Jaime Daniel Garfias, I’m Mexican-American and I’m 17. I’m from the Northside of Chicago, I grew up in the Ravenswood area, which is a good 15-20 minute drive to Wrigley Field. I started playing tackle football at the age of 10 as a 4th grader. Played two years in the in house program. Then join the travel team for 3 yrs which were my 6th,7th,and 8th grade year. I played at Welles park for the Northside Titans. I completed my Freshman year of football at Amundsen on November of 2019. Which was a loss in the 1st round of the state playoffs. For the winter season I joined wrestling with the intent that it would help me become a more balanced football player.
Due to covid our season for my sophomore yr was moved to the spring time and cut short. We were to have a 5 game season. But we ended the season 3-0. Two games had to get canceled due to covid concerns. But I feel that this was like a preseason for the fall of 2021 which will be my junior year.
Fall of 2021 my junior year we went 8-2 our losses came to Morgan Park in week 9 and to Crystal Lake Central in week 10 of the 1st round of the State Playoffs.
Some life changing events that have influenced who I am is the passing of my mother and just living with my father. The loss of my mother at the age of 8 showed me that not everything is guaranteed, and I should be grateful for everything I earn and receive. Also living with my father allowed him to show me how the real world truly is. I wouldn’t say I had to grow up faster than others, but I did realize that the world isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Through this, I was in a tough spot and I wanted to exert all the negative thoughts and sadness into something positive, and so football came into my life.
Through football I’ve learned that not only do you need to be talented at the sport, but you also need to show passion and be the hardest worker you possibly can be along with respecting the game. My goal for highschool is to get the IB Diploma Seal and go to college. My father was the first in his family to go to college and so I’m striving to be the first to go and graduate from college. Not only am I a player of the game but I’m a student of the game. I watch film and prepare to the best of my ability, in order to be reliable for my team. Through the years I’ve learned to become a leader and make sure that my teammates know that they can trust me. This game is built on trust and so through trusting the man next to me, we’ll succeed further.
