Class of 2026 Eric Smith twitter@IamEsmith4 School Edwardsville Illinois High School Position ATH College - Height 6'0" 160lbs. Scouting Reports Player Info Scouting Report on Showcase Attendee EVALUATED 05/25/2025 Aaron Jennings Midwest Regional Scouting Director ✅ SCOUTING REPORT: EJ Smith is a dynamic two-way athlete out of Edwardsville (IL) in the Class of 2026 who brings elite speed and polished skill to both wide receiver and defensive back roles. At 6’0, 160 pounds, Smith may not be the biggest player on the field, but his 4.4 reported 40-yard dash and explosive quickness give him a major edge in open space. He’s a fluid, intelligent route-runner with natural hands and body control, making him a constant threat in the passing game. Defensively, he’s just as impactful—showing the footwork, recovery speed, and field vision needed to lock down in man or zone coverage. Smith plays with energy and poise, and his ability to affect the game from multiple positions makes him one of the more intriguing dual-threat skill prospects in Illinois’ 2026 class. ✅ ANALYSIS: As a receiver, Smith consistently creates separation with clean releases and sharp, efficient route breaks. He maintains speed through his route stems and adjusts well to defensive leverage, often winning with acceleration in the final phase. His top-end speed makes him a serious vertical threat, but he’s just as dangerous on underneath routes, screens, and quick outs thanks to his burst and lateral quickness. Smith has reliable hands and shows great concentration in traffic, with the ability to come down with contested grabs despite his lighter frame. After the catch, he’s elusive and balanced, capable of turning a short gain into a big play with subtle cuts and strong field awareness. On defense, he reads the quarterback well, stays disciplined in zone, and rarely overcommits. In man coverage, his patience at the line and recovery ability allow him to stay in phase even when initially challenged. He’s aggressive when breaking on the ball and doesn’t shy away from contact, showing a physical edge that continues to develop. His dual-sport background and polished movement skills make him a natural playmaker on both sides of the field. With added strength and continued technical refinement, Smith could project as either a high-impact slot receiver or a versatile defensive back at the next level. ✅ GREATEST STRENGTHS: Verified 4.4 speed that translates on both sides of the ball Crisp route-running with consistent separation and clean breaks Quick acceleration and top-end burst on screens and verticals Fluid movement, great tracking, and recovery ability in coverage Strong concentration and reliable hands in contested situations Intelligent, disciplined DB with strong man and zone awareness Versatile weapon who can impact offense, defense, and special teams Confident, composed athlete who plays fast and with purpose Natural balance and body control after the catch or in transition High-upside athlete with tools to excel as either WR or DB at the next level
