Personal Statement
My name is Matthew Soetmelk, I am 6'3" and 175 pounds. I am a very versatile player, throughout my football career I have needed to step into many different positions. In high school I played tight end/wide receiver and strong safety.
I started playing tackle football when I was eight years old and knew then I wanted to play football in college. I grew up being taught the phrase, "Academics first, Sports second." My number one goal in college is academics, I am confident success on the field will follow. My parents instilled in me a passion to love whatever I do and focus on success. If I were to fail, I needed to step back, look where I did succeed, start from that point and take another path until I accomplished the goal. The basic principal of never giving up.
As soon as I could push a lawn mower, I started knocking on doors which turned into starting my own business of lawn and snow removal services. Almost year round I worked my business, played multi sports, went to high school and took college class, this past summer I added in a second job processing chickens.
In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, hunting, trapping and fishing, I love being outdoors. I am interested in taking Business Administration in college, I have a respect for our elderly and would like to see a change in Nursing Home care. I love learning from my elders and I would like to make sure they have the care they deserve. I enjoy physical activities and staying physically and emotionally fit. I like to volunteer at our local veterinary clinic. I also enjoy worship service on Sunday and youth group on Wednesday evenings.
I am a member of Student Council and participate in Large Group Choir. I am a team captain for my football and basketball team. This last year I competed at state in the 4 x 800 meter relay.
I was named to the All-Conference, All-District, and All-Area football teams as a tight end. My high school team is run first and averages only six passes a game. I averaged 22 yards per catch. As safety, I was the leading tackler
