Personal Statement
My name is Delvin Johnson I am 5'8, class of 2021. My goal is to be a leader on and off the field. I work to become a better student and player everyday by starting with the small things. Late nights and early mornings for me! I get better everyday by taking no days off, I love to work hard. I will be a great addition to the team! My accomplishments on the field include Junior year, 1st team all-county as voted on by the Gazette sports writers, and 1st team All-metro as voted on by the Baltimore Sun and Washington post sports writers with over 2000 rushing and receiving yards and 20 touchdowns. I also had 6 interceptions defensively playing safety and Corner.
Trying to come out of Annapolis Maryland isn't a walk in the park. I come from a small city where people will try to kill you just for being in the wrong place. My family is from newtown 20, a small area in Annapolis. I have been through so much trauma just being in that area growing up. By the time I was 14 years old, I experienced being shot at and jumped just because of where I lived. I tried my best to stay out the conflict but people always found a way to bring me back to it. I found a way to separate myself from it by playing football. Football is an outlet for me. I have had many setbacks but I continued to persevere.
My 9th grade year I broke my collarbone. As a 14 yr old on varsity, my coach told me that I was too small to play running back so I switched to safety. In the first game I returned an interception for a touchdown, our only touchdown of the game, and later broke my collarbone making a tackle. I didnt play another game that year recovering from injury. After that season, My aunt reached out to a coach at South River High School on my behalf about a place to live to get away from that area.
My 10th grade year I moved in with this coach and his family so I was transferred to South River High school. I tried out and made varsity. My position was back up running back and starting safety. I avgd over 9 yds per carry, scored 6 touchdowns, and had 5 interceptions. My 11th grade year it was my time to shine! I spent the off season working out and running. I was focused on getting bigger, stronger and faster. It payed off as we went undefeated winning the county Championship, I led the county in rushing and rushing touchdowns, and we eventually lost in the second round of the state playoffs.
The coach that took me in took a coaching job at another high school closer to his house and I decided to transfer with him for my senior year. Unfortunately My senior year Football was cancelled in Maryland during the fall. We start a shortened spring season with our first game scheduled for March 5th.
It was not an easy road to get here today. I have seen so much in my lifetime from my mom and aunt doing drugs in front of me and My grandmother dying. I didn't have the best childhood but my family did their best to provide for me. I was one of those kids who had to grow up without a mother or father. I was what they call a "prison baby" because my mother was incarcerated when I was born so my aunt and grandmother took me in as an infant. My father has been in prison for the majority of my life and about to come home. He hasn't seen me play high school football yet and my mother has been home but had a drug problem and almost died because of heart failure. Despite all the obstacles in my life, I have excelled at every level of football i have ever played, from youth, through high school. I say all this to show that I am a fighter. I have been fighting the odds my entire life and playing college ball means a lot to me and going to college means a lot to me and my family. I wouldn't be here today without the Prince family taking me in and helping get to where I am today and I appreciate everything and will continue to keep my faith in god and work hard everyday on the field and off the field.
Wherever I play will get the absolute best version of me on and off the field everyday.
