Personal Statement
My name is Ray Magliozzi, I’m a 6’3” 220 lb defensive end from Burlington, MA in the class of 2021. I play for Burlington High School in the Middlesex Leauge, I was named an all star for the Middlesex League for my junior season.
I am a solid B student and am constantly working to improve my grades and GPA. I scored an 1150 on my PSAT at the beginning of my junior year. I was unable to take the March SAT’s because of Covid-19.
I come from an athletic family and background. My mother played Division 1 basketball at Lafayette College. I also have a brother who plays 3 sports and continues to play sports during the summer. I also play 2 other sports, hockey in the winter and baseball in the spring. I am on varsity for both of those sports. I was also ranked in the top 290 players in Massachusetts by Neutral Zone Mass for hockey.
Prior to my freshman year I had never played football. My parents deemed it not worth it because of the research behind head injuries and concussions. They always reassured me that I would be big enough and athletic enough to play in high school without any prior experience. I did not believe them until I stepped on the field my freshman year and was one of the biggest and strongest kids and the game came naturally to me because of my athletic ability. I was able to pick up the game quickly and realized right away that when it came to improving on the field, the weight room was my best friend. Once I got serious about lifting and treating my body right, my game took off. After I was named an All-Star after my junior season I realized how quickly my game has progressed in such a short time and I’m excited about how much more I can progress into my senior year and hopefully for four years after that.
In addition to being naturally athletic, big, and strong, I consider myself to have a great work ethic. I lifted twice a day almost every day over the summer leading up to my junior year and I would spend time at the field conditioning and doing cone and ladder drills by myself. In fact, one of my favorite activities that I’ve done over this quarantine has been to construct my own workouts off of YouTube videos and articles off the internet, and compile them together and make my own workout plans. I believe that my dedication to the weight room and my prominent work ethic along with the great coaching I’ve received over my three years at BHS are the main reasons why I’ve been so successful on the field despite having so much less experience than the majority of the competition that I play against. I plan on carrying over my work ethic into college and being a sponge for all coaching that I will receive.
