Personal Statement

Growing up, spending time with family and friends, school, and athletics have allowed me to laugh, learn, and mature into the person I am. Although I have academic and athletic goals to succeed, the main objective is to reach my full potential in both of them. For the past ten years,  wrestling has been a large part of my life, helping me grow not only in strength, but in character as well. I have grown to become determined, disciplined, and confident in myself as an athlete and a person.

Many people have said to me that I am a very determined person. Doing well on the mat and in the classroom has proven to be the foundation of my determination. I constantly strive to be the best that I can be. During practice when we do our drills, I push myself to be the example the team looks to. When times get tough and I feel like giving up, my determination takes over and I persevere. Determination outside of sports has led me to the success I have experienced with my academics. I strive to remain a successful student every day. If it means studying late or coming to school early to meet with a teacher, I do whatever it takes to excel. Determination is an asset one needs through life. Although I am young, I have learned that life isn’t always easy. Family issues and/or a career will present their ups and downs. Having determination and never settling for “ok” will allow me the ability to keep fighting through the tough times.

Managing athletics year round, maintaining a 3.7 GPA, all while trying to balance family and friends requires discipline. Focused attention and effort in the classroom have allowed me to be successful in school. After practicing every night, my discipline keeps me up to make sure I’m prepared for the test in the morning or finished with the project on time. Being disciplined on the mat helps me see the bigger picture in situations. I understand that in order to be successful individually, or as a team, sacrifices involving discipline must be made. If I’m given a role, I have to stay focused in that role in order for the team to succeed, even if it means personal sacrifice. This trait will also impact my college experience. Discipline will help me with college and my life after college by managing my time and the stresses that will come with everyday life. Developing a career, starting a family, and maintaining a strong financial future will require discipline in order to be successful.

Arrogance is talking about how good your abilities are and bragging about your future goals. Confidence is approaching a difficult situation knowing, feeling in your heart that you can succeed and proving it; whether it be an exam in school or being the closing seconds of a tight match. Confidence is what makes me win the scramble to earn the winning points in my match.  My confidence has helped me succeed in the classroom as well as on the mat. I believe in my abilities and where they can take me.  A confident person is a successful person, no matter their future goals.

I am passionate about my long term goal of reaching my potential in the classroom and on the mat. My family, my education, and sports have helped me grow to become determined, disciplined, and confident in myself as an athlete and a person. High school and college will hopefully become the foundation of my career. Wrestling has helped establish the foundation of who I am as a person.
