Personal Statement
Football is a very eventful and fun sport to play but you can’t have fun in football if you don’t put time into football. My coach’s mantra is “Football is a god and all of you are worshiping it right now. You cannot worship two gods, you cannot mess around and worship another god.” I know he’s speaking to us about focus, dedication, and hard work and one word sums all of that up, COMMITMENT. In my mind, the there’s no difference in the dedication and time spent on the field and the time spent with the family or the time spent in the classroom. To be committed means all of these things, all the way, all the time.
Last year my team went 2-7. It was a struggle but no one quit because we all knew that we were working harder than the year before and we will strive to be better in the year ahead. My personal commitment to the sport influences my teammates. If a teammate is down emotionally or physically during practice or in a game, I pick them up. If they make a mistake, I tell them to have a “short memory”...meaning move on the next play or the next rep or the mistake will continue to negatively effect the team and then the game. To make mistakes and learn from them shows commitment to the coaches, teammates, and the game of football.
My name is Owen McGuffey and I am committed to succeeding.
