  • Joe Rodriguez - Starting QB#12 Varsity Football marlina rodriguez <[email protected]> 5:03 PM (7 minutes ago) to Illiana Putnam County Courier High Scool Football Roundups & Predictions for the Fall Season August 27, 2015 PREDICTION: 5-1, postseason berth -- Rich Thomaselli offense and defense – and special teams, where he is a kick returner. If the Indians can pull it together defensively, especially in the secondary – where they gave up some big plays in the near-upset of John Jay – this is a playoff team. PREDICTION: 4-2, postseason berth -- Rich Thomaselli Carmel football looking for return to succes CARMEL FOOTBALL COACH: Todd Cayea (21st year) TEAM RECORD IN 2014: 4-5 KEY RETURNERS: Joe Rodriguez, Sr. QB; Quinn Willman, Sr. WR; Ryan Sullivan, Sr. WR; Anthony Schneider, Sr. DL; Luis Casillas, Sr. DL KEY NEWCOMERS: David Vega, Jr. RB THE COURIER’S TAKE: Is this the year it all comes together for Carmel? Cayea has an overall record of 120-79-2 but the Rams have struggled the last three years going 4-4, 3-6 and 4-5. Now in his fourth year as a starter, senior QB Joe Rodriguez is poised to have a breakout season thanks to having a bevy of options on offense. In addition to Willman and Sullivan, the transfer from Stepinac, Rodriguez will have a solid running game and a good line. This is Rodriguez’s time to shine. He has started since his freshman year. With the pieces around him, playoffs are a strong possibility. PREDICTION: 4-2, postseason berth -- Rich Thomaselli __________________________________________________________________________________________________ After tough times, Carmel hoping to reap rewards VARSITY INSIDER Josh Thomson, [email protected]:02 p.m. EDT August 19, 2015 635755922864161486-todd-cayeaBuy Photo (Photo: Frank Becerra Jr. / The Journal News) TAGS CarmelNYSPHSAA Section 1Nick McDonaldCarmel School DistrictHigh school footballAnthony Schneider 98 CONNECT 12 TWEET LINKEDIN COMMENT EMAIL MORE CARMEL – On the heels of two straight losing seasons, Carmel football coach Todd Cayea finally sees reasons for optimism. They come in the form of his fourth-year returning starter at quarterback, his two veteran playmakers at wide receiver, and a stable of three running backs, all of them worthy of carries in an offense he believes can be potent. The optimism also comes in the form of a bright future. Carmel's freshman team is 35 deep, a byproduct of combining the district's two youth football programs into one unit several years ago. If the Rams are on the brink of a rebirth as a program, it could begin in earnest thanks to a versatile offense. Senior Joe Rodriguez, now in his fourth year as the starting quarterback, will have senior targets Quinn William and Ryan Sullivan at receiver. Seniors Kwashon Correa and John Morris and junior David Vega are all expected to earn time behind them at running back. "I think we can be difficult to defend," Cayea said. "We need to do a good job spreading the ball around and getting it into all of our playmakers' hands. Everybody has to buy in. We have to make sure we're not selfish. We have guys who can make plays, but we have to be patient. And I think it can take pressure off our young offensive line." Unlike Carmel's stronger teams of past, line play is not yet a given strength. The group on offense has depth to counterbalance its lack of experience and star power. Two juniors who earned playing time as sophomores, Ryan Sahle and Nick McDonald, will join seniors Anthony Schneider and Luis Casillas as key pieces up front. The offensive line could determine whether Carmel's playmakers perform up to expectations. "That's going to be one of the keys," Cayea said. "It's all going to be how fast we mature on both sides of the ball up front. That's the reason why we've been in the situation we've been in the last few years. We just haven't had the size up front." Some of the young linemen will earn snaps on defense alongside returning starters like Morris, a linebacker, safety Dominic Caporale and defensive end Josh Beauchesne. Still, Rodriguez's fortunes are what may determine whether or not Carmel has a playoff future. Rodriguez has been a focal point as the team struggled through 4-4, 3-6 and 4-5 seasons the last three years, but Cayea said the adversity has helped his quarterback grow as a player. "If there is any kid who I've coached, he deserves an opportunity to have a good year," he said. "He's paid his dues. He's paid the price. I thought if you look at his last three or four games last year, he was playing the best football of his career. We're hoping that he can carry that over." ___________________________________________________________________ Putnam Examiner Tuesday Sep 8, 2015 Carmel QB Joey Rodriguez enters his fourth season on the varsity scene. CARMEL The Rams (4-5) have a ton of experience under center in senior QB Joey Rodriguez, the only four-year signal caller in the history of Rams football, and 22 years of experience on the sideline in venerable Coach Todd Cayea, an old-school mentor. The two have the know-how to carry out a game-plan and expect to be among the top eight teams this season and reach the playoffs. “Joey has looked great thus far,” Cayea said. “He’s paid his dues the last three years, and now we’ve got some kids who can run under his ball and he has shown some great touch and leadership. We’ll take some shots with him.” Rodriguez and WRs Ryan Sullivan and Quinn Willman should supply plenty of downfield action in an offense that likes to air it out, and the RBs, including Kwashon Correa and John Morris and junior David Vega. Defensively, Carmel junior NG/OL Nick McDonald, who goes 250 on a good day, is a son-of-a-run-stuffer, who should pose a threat on both sides of the ball once he returns to full health. Senior Joey Kenna is a tough center. Whether or not the Rams can hold up in the trenches will determine whether or not they can get past their No.10 ranking and into the top eight to make playoffs. “We’ve got some really good skill position players, no doubt about it, but we’ll only go as far as our O-line takes us,” Cayea said. “If we can minimize the self-inflicted wounds, we’ll be a better team than people expect. But we’re not good enough to overcome our own mistakes. It’s a great bunch of kids and we’re ready to get it going.” Juniors, Ryan Sahle and Nick McDonald, will join seniors Anthony Schneider, Joe Kenna and Luis Casillas in the trenches on the O-line. Morris (LB), Dominic Caporale (DB) and edge rusher Josh Beauchesne all saw time on defense last season. The White Plains High School Varsity Football Team started their 2015 season on a losing note. The Tigers lost to Carmel High School, 39-24, as Rams quarterback Joe Rodriquez completed 8-of-13 passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns. The Tigers were also exploited on the ground, while Carmel running back David Vega rushed for 148 yards and a touchdown.
