Personal Statement
At the age of 9, I needed something stimulating to latch onto because my attention span was short. So, I began playing basketball and soccer, but they just did not keep my attention. And then, there was FOOTBALL! Football has helped me to relieve some of my life stresses such as bullying in school and my ADHD diagnosis. I have learned about self-control, endurance, instinct, leadership, humility, athleticism, and strategy. Even though I still have some focus issues in school, I have always maintained concentration during football practices and games. What I can offer your team is an “iron-man” player. I can also offer a player who has the drive, intensity, grind, and passion for football. I strive to be a valuable player, always looking for ways to help my team win.
Playing football has taught me the highs and lows of the game. For example, advancing to one game away from the Intermediate Division Championship game last season was devastating, but being part of team history for making it that far since inception was amazing. After losing in the semifinals, I had never felt worse. It was not because of the physical aspects; it was the feeling of failure. But, Coach Breez said something after the loss that completely changed my mood. He said, “I am so proud of the way you guys played today. You were knocked down, but you never stayed down. Getting back up as a team was all that mattered.” This was a teachable moment for me. It taught me how to persevere in the face of adversity.
I know that I have been struggling with my GPA, but I do not want it to be a deterrent from applying to college. I, along with my mom and guidance counselor, have developed strategies to improve academically. For example, I have asked my teachers for extra credit assignments. I have been spending my lunch hour with either a tutor or one of my teachers each day. I have also been participating more in classes as well as studying hard. My goals are to play college football and to acquire a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science-Game Development. College is a huge step along my path of future goals and perhaps the most vital of them all. I do not know what my future holds, but I am trusting that God will guide me. I owe it to myself to achieve my goals and to empower myself to be incomparable.
