In my first two years playing high school varsity football, our team only had a combined total of 9 seniors, and we were 1 and 19. Fighting against that adversity alongside my very young team helped me learn how to be a leader by making me step up and take charge very early in my career. Going to a small Christian school in only its fifth year of 11-man football, it was very easy to fall victim to complacency and just accepting that "maybe we won't be very good". As a 14-year-old, 200lb kid, I faced 300+ lb men on the line. Facing those trials every week taught me that sometimes you have to face things in life that you're not ready for; that even though you may not think you can handle it, life will still throw it at you. If you don't get up and hit back, it will hit you even harder the next time.
Going into my sophomore season, I was excited to get on the field and I ended up playing the best game I had to date. In the 4th quarter of that game, a hard hit left me with a severe concussion. In the following weeks, I learned for the first time what true fear was, but I had made a commitment to myself and most importantly my team to come back as soon as I was cleared. I was not going to let fear keep me off the field. After the first hard hit at my first game back, that fear was gone. That setback could have discouraged me, but I pushed through the fear of what could happen, and I came back.
There are thousands of naturally talented players out there that you could be recruiting, but not all of those players have shown the perseverance and determination to work and play hard every game, despite any setbacks they have faced.
