Personal Statement
My name is Damon Gwynn Jr. I am a 5'10 160 pound Defensive Back, and Receiver from North Side High School in Fort Worth, Texas. The following is about my history and goals for my future.
I grew up in a family of 10 kids and am the only son born to my mother. Sports is not really a big issue to my family, getting a college education is; however sports are really big in my heart, in addition to obtaining a college education. I first started playing football in the 7th grade. To be honest, I was not the All-star on the team, but as years went on, being the team All-star wasn't as important to me as being the best student and athlete that I can be. I progressed and have become the athlete I am today. In my life I have experienced some form of negativity , where people told me I cannot be this or I cannot do that, when it comes to my dream of one day being one of the best college athletes around; but I told them and tell myself, "In a few years, you will be watching me on Saturday afternoons playing on a college field with my college teammates."
I plan on playing Corner or Free Safety past the high school level. My goal is to be the first in my family to go to college on an athletic scholarship. Although my high school is known for losing, I hope to turn that around and help take my team to playoffs. I want college coaches to know me as the guy who makes big plays and does anything to help my team. I want the college coaches to know who I am and where I am coming from.
I hope all the work that I am putting into football pays off, whether I am playing D1 or D2 football. I hope one day, I can prove to kids growing up in situations like I did, that even if people say you cannot do something or that you will never make it, you can make it with hard work and dedication. I hope to be a role model my family can be proud of..
Things I am good at on the field, I am good at recognizing short and long passes. I can break on the ball very well and cause either a pass deflection or interception. I have good footwork coming out of the back peddle into breaking on the ball. I am a good team player and try to always exhibit good sportsman like conduct weater it is against the opposing team or while trying to rejuvenate team morale. When my teammates feel down after messing up on a play or just that its not their best performance, one of the things I will tell them is, "Hey, pick your head up and shake it off, you got this! Just bounce back from that and explode on it in the next play." I know that a key part to being a successful athlete is being able to show loyalty and compassion for my teammates and to recognize that even the best players can have an 'off' game moment, but the important thing is that they don't give up, and on their next opportunity that they do their best to recover from it.
