As a 6'4", 195-pound quarterback, I fall into the window of the typical quarterback's physical build. However, my character and determination are not so typical. Due to some unusual family circumstances, I transferred high schools 3 times and I had to prove myself as a new student and new athlete each time. It's not easy to walk onto a football field with a group of guys who've played together for years and earn their acceptance, much less earn a starting quarterback position. However, my teammates and coaches soon realized that I would give everything I could for my team. I never used my family situation as an excuse. A man's character isn't formed when things are going smoothly. Character is formed by our reactions to the obstacles we face and how we react to things that are out of our control. The difficulties in my life caused me to focus more on things that I can control: my personal goals, my commitment to my team, and my character. More than anything, I want to be a collegiate athlete because my determination drives me to do more, learn more, and be more than anyone ever expected.
An athletic scholarship for college would be such a blessing. However, even if I'm an athlete who is having to pay my own way, I will give the same level or commitment and determination to my team. I realize that only 6% of high-school athletes actually play in college and I'm committed to being a part of that 6%. Football motivates me; it drives me; it sustains me through the rough times. When I'm on the field, the only thing that matters is getting the next touchdown. I appreciate the chance to continue my football career at the collegiate level.
