Personal Statement
Basketball is a major part of my life, but it’s not my only priority. I have always tried to put God first, family second, then education and sports third. It has been hard to balance these priorities in my life. However, I have seen the positive effects that have come from balancing them. As an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, I have been taught the morals and standards it takes to be a good person in life such as respecting others, treating my body right, and to be the best person I can be. These morals and standards have helped me tremendously in basketball. I have also been involved in Boy Scouts of America, and I have received my Eagle Scout award, teaching me to finish what I start. My family has taught me what it takes to be successful in sports, and that I must develop certain characteristics to help me achieve my goals of College Basketball. These characteristics include leadership, honesty, accountability, and selflessness. Selflessness is the main characteristic I have learned from my church, family, and sports. There's more than just myself. To be successful in life, you must rely and seek help from others and God. Likewise, basketball has taught me that I can't win on my own. There's five other players on the court, and if our team only utilizes one player, we won't have a successful season.
Sports has always been a major part in my family's life. I have countless memories watching my brother and sister play sports at the high school level, and the opportunity to watch my brother play collegiate football. I have always loved sports, and as a young boy I always had a ball in my hand. Throughout elementary school, middle school, and my freshman year in high school, I have always played three sports; basketball, baseball, and football. I loved all three, but each year I always looked forward to basketball more than the other two sports. I loved everything about the game, which is why I decided to not play baseball my Sophomore and Junior years to focus on basketball. Throughout my years of playing basketball, I have learned much about myself. One of the main things I have learned is what type of leader I am. I like to lead by example. I don't like to get down on my teammates. Rather, I try and encourage them when they are struggling and celebrate with them when we succeed. School is also very important in my life. I'm one to hold myself to high expectations, and I'm always striving to get straight A's. In my life, I set goals to improve myself as a person and as an athlete. I want to play College Basketball. I want to have the opportunity to play the sport I love while receiving a free education. I believe I can help your program and be a key asset in bringing out the best in everyone on the team.
