Personal Statement
One might initially look at my profile and put me in a category as "just another privileged kid from suburbia America ." Let me tell you why I do and why I do not fit that stereotype. First of all, I am privileged because I have parents who care about me and who have given me the opportunity to attend good schools and live in an amazing community. I do not, however, take those things for granted.
I come from a history of family members who have overcome great trials of being orphaned and abuse and because they overcame, I realize the gift they have given me. As a child, I struggled academically and was categorized with a developmental delay. I struggled with speech, and textures, among other things. However, like those previously mentioned, I too have overcome many of those obstacles! Partly of my parents' love and belief in me, but mostly because of my own hard work and determination. As a kindergartner I used to set my alarm at 5:30 am before school everyday to work on my basketball game outside in the dark and cold of the morning. As I have grown I have continued that same work ethic and passion and that is what has allowed me to excel on the teams I have participated in both on and off the court. You won't meet a coach or teammate of mine who would tell you differently. The things that were once a challenge have now become some of my greatest strengths. I am a good leader, not because I say I am, but because I do my best to work harder than anyone I know. People naturally follow.
I could sit and tell you that I am the most gifted player and I score the highest points in every game. That isn't entirely true. While I do earn my fair share of points, assists, and rebounds I also know that when I am on the court the synergy changes. My team as whole outperforms the other team significantly as to when I'm not on the court. My strength is adding passion and consistency and trust to my team. When the coach chooses to play me in the end of a game, or puts me on the line for a technical shot because he trusts in the synergy and focus I'm able to help create, that to me is victory.
I am a versatile player and play anywhere from a shooting guard to center. I learn quickly and value the life lessons this sport teaches me. Additionally, I value education and desperately want to attend college. I hope you'll consider giving me an opportunity to show you my passion and performance in person.
