Personal Statement

My name is DeMarre Walker, I was born August 2, 1997 in Fairfield, California to the proud parents of Joe and LaMell Walker. I am the youngest of three boys. I remember when I was younger, I used to go to my older brother’s basketball practice and attempt to shoot the ball. Although the ball never got close to the rim, the players and coaches encouraged me to keep trying and at times even picked me up so that I could shoot ball into basket. As a result, the passion for basketball grew on me at an early age. I played on my first organized AAU basketball team, Fairfield Ballers, when I was in the second grade. Here is where I learned the fundamentals of the game and starting growing as a basketball player. As an AAU competitor from the second grade until now, I have been fortunate to participate in multiple basketball tournaments in the western region of the United States (i.e., Los Angeles, CA., Las Vegas, NV., Reno NV., San Diego, CA., etc.). This year I am excited to extend this list of places during my AAU season as I prepare to become a better athlete.
I am currently a junior at Vanden High School in Fairfield, California where I am a second year varsity level competitor on the basketball team. This 2013-2014 season I have led my team to our first Solano County Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championship since 1996-97. During the 27 games of regular season I average 16.6 points per game, 5.4 assists per game, and 3 rebounds per game, totaling 448 points for my junior year season. I was runner-up for league MVP, and I received all SCAC First Team. Next year I not only plan on conquering the league title again and receiving league MVP, but I also want lead my team to our second CIF basketball championship in school history. During this playoff season I averaged 21.8 points per game, 7.4 assists per game, and 5.5 rebounds per game.
I am thankful for having a great role model and mentor, my older brother. He always tells me that education is the key to success. Therefore, during my final years here at Vanden High School, in addition to improving on the basketball court, I also plan on becoming a more dedicated scholar and performing better in the classroom. I am scheduled to take my SAT exam on June 7, 2014. I want to follow in the footsteps of my older brother, by going to college and pursuing my dream. My goal is to graduate with at least a 3.0 GPA, so that I am able to go to a good college or university on a full athletic scholarship, play NCAA basketball and receive a bachelor's degree.
