Personal Statement

Ever since I was in kindergarten, I have always had a love for basketball, beginning with a basketball camp called Pee Wee Hoopsters. I was standing only at 4-foot tall, attempting to throw what seemed to be a bowling ball into a hoop as high as the sky. From there, the fire for my love of basketball ignited.

I have just finished my varsity Sophomore season, being the most valuable player on my team and 2nd team all-league. I averaged 21 points, 8 assists, and 4 rebounds per game -12 of the 21 points coming from three-pointers. Quite a few times each game, I do not hesitate to pull my shot between the three-point and half-court lines. This was made possible because of the many leagues and teams I played in, including; Travel Ball in the seventh grade, AAU in the eighth grade, and MVP for my middle-school team.

Passion, work ethic, and perseverance are the traits that form my basketball abilities. My passion is demonstrated through my work ethic which includes personal sacrifices. In addition to my weekday practices, my weekends are mainly filled with early-morning workouts and trainings. I always persevere when the going gets tough which has formed great discipline. The term “heart over height” can be used to describe me. I may not be the biggest and tallest player on the court, but I make up the size and the height difference by being physical, aggressive, and effectively communicative to my teammates. I do not fear bigger and taller players; I enjoy taking them on as a challenge, and formidable opponents to overcome.

As a dual career path, I aspire to become a psychiatrist alongside pursuing basketball. Being a psychiatrist would be a fitting occupation for me because I enjoy making a difference in the lives of others. The journey to become a psychiatrist is very demanding of one’s time and effort but like basketball, the hard work pays off. Discipline is needed to become and to be a psychiatrist, I can thoroughly fulfill the needs of this occupation because through basketball discipline has been ingrained into me.

Basketball is the center of my life. During the course of my high school years, I am working hard to be the greatest player I can be. I am an all-around coachable player, able and willing to adapt to the dynamic of a team. I believe these are the reasons that not only make me a good player but a great player.
