I come from a long line of athletes - my grandfather was a decorated college football and baseball player - and went on to become a Hall of Fame college coach. My dad was a water polo player, my mother a soccer player. I have cousins who excel in other college athletics including softball and golf. And for as long as I can remember, I have loved BASKETBALL. I have memories as a toddler shooting a 4" plastic ball through a Little Tykes electronic hoop that stood 24" off the floor and I have pictures to prove it.
And as I got older anything that was round, and I could get my hands on, I would use to shoot in my little hoop, my "big boy" hoop, and finally a regulation hoop. But throughout my youth, even as a stand out shooter, I was always encouraged to take up a different sport. I was told I could never "make it far" in basketball because it "wasn't in my DNA" - I wouldn't be tall enough, big enough or fast enough.
My mom and dad, however, would always tell me to find one passion, and they would support me in the pursuit of that passion no matter what the odds. I have had a long time dream to play basketball in college and I want to see how far I can take that dream.
In junior high I became the "super star" in our small town and was quickly on my way to being a super star at the local high school (D4). But my parents and I agreed it would be a good test to challenge my skills at a higher level, and we committed to attending school at St. Mary's High School (D2) -which was an hour's drive (one way) from home. I worked very hard Freshman year to prove myself - and was rewarded with not only a JV starting spot, but was the only player selected to join Varsity for the playoffs that year. Now as a Junior, I will begin my second full year on the Varsity roster - most likely as a starter.
I work hard every day, in school and on the court. I come to practice ready to learn. I come to school ready to learn. I perform best on the court and in school when the two are combined - I focus better and am more disciplined and organized when I have to balance the two. I am not very flamboyant and have been told to step up the "swag" when entering the gym or walking on court. I think I prefer to let my work do the talking, but am willing to step out of my comfort zone when necessary.
I am ready to play at the next level and hope to find a college team that will allow me to pursue a lifetime dream, while obtaining a college education.
