My name is John Zapata, I’m a 6”8’ center who is a senior in North Tahoe High school in Tahoe City, California fall 2019. I will graduate in the spring of 2020. I am interested in music production, culinary arts, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical manufacturing. When I play on post I am very aggressive and have many moves to play around with. My defense is very good and whoever I'm guarding rarely scores. I do, however, tend to jump a lot, which I am working on and getting better on not doing that. I do average about two blocks a game. I am also working on my ball-handling even though I rarely use it. Transition is where I live, I love leaking out and running the court on offense to get a quick easy bucket. In transition I am a great passer, I can always see the open man and make the right pass to him. As for defense, in transition is the best time to play defense because the other team isn't in a set offense and you can get an easy steal or a crazy block, which is my favorite part of playing. I am getting better at dribbling and passing. My mid-range jump shots do need some work as well as my free throws, and as I progress they do get better but they aren't up to the level I would like them to be.
The reason I play is that I love this game and how you have to transition from offense to defense immediately. The pace and athleticism needed in the game are close to my favorite pieces. However, my all-time favorite aspect of basketball is how everyone's personality fits in and they all cooperate for the team. In the 2018-19 season, I voted to the 2nd team All-league as well as All-State, for my position. Additionally, I was voted the Most Improved Player award for our team. In that same season, our team made our first playoff appearance in 23 years. We finished regionals 2nd overall but sadly went out in the first round of the state championship. This whole experience taught me that playoff energy is tougher than the regular season and I really need to play with that intensity the whole year.
I would like to continue playing basketball after high school. I am considering the community college to 4-year university track, but the am open to all opportunities. I would like to continue studying physics, chemistry, and biotechnology. I like the study of how drugs interact with the body and I'd like to learn more. I've been a hard worker on my team and I always set up my teammates so they can score. I'm willing to go as far as I can physically for my team to win. I'm always the first one on the floor whether it be for a loose ball or a charge. I believe my work ethic sets me apart from others. You tell me to be in the gym 15 minutes early, I will be there 20 minutes early.
I am excited about the opportunities my senior year has for me and look forward to the chance to continue to learn and grow from basketball in the future.
