Personal Statement

Why I want to go to college:

Throughout elementary, middle, and high school I was convinced that completing high school was the only thing that I needed to do to have a successful life.  As time has grown nearer I was completely absorbed with the notion that if I finish high school, I can then go on with my life and get a good job.        Now that I am in my senior year of high school and after talking to some of my peers and teachers I am finding out fast that I would need more than just a high school diploma to be successful in today’s society.

As my high school graduation comes nearer, my life expectations and knowledge had to change.  I know now that the world that my parents and grandparents grew up in no longer exists.  I would need to do so much more than they did in order to have a prosperous and successful career.

During my parents’ and grandparents’ era, the only thing that a person needed to have for a successful career would be a high school diploma.  With a High School Diploma, a person could get a job with the Federal Government, work for 30 years and then receive a pension for the rest of your life.  This does not happen in society today.  A person will need a college degree and beyond to land a job with the Federal or state government.

A high school diploma is not worth the paper that it is written on.  If a person does not have some type of college degree the chances of them having a successful career are very slim.  After looking at jobs on the internet and networking with people in the workforce, I am convinced that even if you receive an associate degree, you would have a much better chance of getting a good job than the person who only has a high school diploma.  I do believe that the more education you have, the higher your income will be.

As a child growing up in Washington, DC the biggest challenge that my parents gave me was to stay out of trouble and to complete high school.  I have managed to stay out of trouble, and I am on my way to completing high school.  As I get closer to my graduation date I know that I am ready to pursue a career in Journalism & Writing.  My dream is to become a Journalist & Author and work as a Historian.  In order for me to fulfill that dream, I must enroll and be accepted into a university or college that has a degree program in African-American studies & English.

In conclusion, I am writing this essay to start the application process to your institution for the fall 2021 school year.  I am choosing your institution because I feel that your university will be a good fit for me and it also offers the best possible program for the career that I have chosen.  I also feel that your campus will allow me to have the best possible college experience that a young man or woman could possibly have in today’s society.  I would like to thank you for taking the time to read my essay and I hope to hear from you in the very near future.
