From an early age, I understood that basketball was a team sport. Inevitably, a coach would ask what position I play. My response has always been “Wherever the team needs me.” From that early age, I have worked to develop the skills necessary to be able to contribute whatever a team needs.
As a young player, a coach slotted me only as a “shooter”. Kind of a Steve Kerr. That prompted me to develop the ability to score the ball at all levels. I have the range and quick release to be a perimeter shooter. But I can also score with a mid-range jump shot and at the rim. To earn playing time, I have focused on defense. I can stop any shooting guard. But I am also effective against a point guard or a small forward. I am a team leader in taking charges, blocks and steals. I believe the assist is the most important statistic. I have the endurance and discipline to play the entire game. I am blessed with dedicated coaches and access to gyms and weight rooms; I continue to work on my craft everyday.
I love basketball because it is a team sport. To win, basketball demands that a coach and any five players must be able to work together. As a cohesive unit, they must be able to quickly recognize, react and execute in fast-moving, dynamic situations. Winning is not about athleticism – it also requires intellect and cooperation. I hope to find a college where I can contribute to helping my coach and my teammates win.
I plan to go to graduate school. Then I will focus only on academics. As an undergraduate, I want to balance academics with the social and athletic experience of being part of a basketball team. I have always enjoyed the personal growth that comes from athletic stress and the friendships that form between teammates. I hope to find a program to which I can contribute.
