Personal Statement

My name is Tyler Gary, I’m a 5’10” 170lbs junior point guard for Riverdale Baptist in Upper Marlboro Maryland . At Riverdale I am an honor roll student with hopes of one day becoming a radiologist. I relocated to the DMV area in the Fall of 2017 to help continue my development as a basketball player in one of the most highly competitive areas in the country. I consider myself as a pure point guard and  floor general I play lockdown defense and have the ability to create my own shoot.

As a Freshman, I started roughly 40% of the games as the point guard for Capital Christian Academy. After that year I transferred to Riverdale Baptist, and as a sophomore I played both for the Varsity and the high school JV team. I was able to make the starting lineup on a few occasions for the Varsity team. As  a Junior my school did not participate in any basketball activities. I have been working with personal trainers for the entire year, with hopes of playing some travel basketball the summer of 2021, and attending some elite camps.

I have continued my early morning workouts to continue to build by skills. I lift 3 days per week, and attend a joint training season 3 days per week in hopes to continue my basketball career at the college level.

My goal is to fulfill both my athletic and academic interest at the college level. Academically I hope to one day to become a radiologist. I became interest in radiologist while observing what they did while receiving x-rays over the years while playing various sports that included baseball and football.

My other interest when I’m not play or watch basketball is playing video games and doing community service. I attempt to do some type of community service with my father at least every other month. Which has included adopt-a-highway, feeding the homeless, or clothing drives. Last academic year I was selected to be in the Youth Leadership Development Course hosted by the local alumni chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha. I plan to apply for the opportunity again this year and play a larger role in the curriculum.

  • Moving onto a point guard that could do nearly no wrong on either end of the floor, Tyler Gary. He’s a very nice two-way player that controls the tempo on both sides; has the ability to play either guard spot in a pinch. Offensively, he is able to contort defenses with his innate ability to handle and distribute the ball to teammates, a phenomenal passer that can find openings with even the tightest of spaces. He’s able to get to the rim and finish with ease but also has a quality jump shot from three, is a scorer on three levels. On the other side of the ball, Gary played strong defense on and off-ball. Next in his development process is to work on moving without the ball and rebounding on both ends, as this would allow him to play off-ball much easier. Coach Gary on Gary: “Tyler is a pure point guard that has poise in handling pressure and double teams in the open court. Great court vision in seeing open lanes and open men. Plays almost too unselfishly by passing up open looks to pass to open teammates. Good shooting mechanics and finishing at the rim; is a plus defender.” If Gary continues to polish his game, there’s no doubt he’s going to be on our radar for a long time.

  • Tyler has good quickness and speed in the open court. While he had some moments on the offensive end of the court, it was his defense that was noticeable. Tyler played good “on ball” defense and got back in transition. Offensively, Tyler attached the rim and got into the lane repeatedly. It was a solid all around performance.
