I love basketball because it has brought me a sense of community, discipline, and happiness since I was a kid. I enjoy operating as part of a team, for better or worse, and learning from coaches and teammates. I have become a leader among my teammates during my Junior year of high school and it gives me pride to get that respect and to help others.
When I was a little kid, I struggled with school. We learned that I had dyslexia in the third grade. Being dyslexic helped to shape me as a student – I was quiet and hardworking to compensate for my learning disability. Basketball was a relief from school and was something I could naturally do well, so I was out of my shell. I worked hard to overcome my dyslexia, and when I came off my IEP, it was a signal to me that my physical and mental struggles had paid off. It remains a lesson for me about working hard and practicing.
As I look to my future, I hope that I can use basketball to help me to grow and also to open up opportunities. I have a goal to extend my playing career into college to enhance my entire college experience.
