Personal Statement

When I was younger, I was on the basketball court shooting a ball and I kept missing. I took notice and decided to put more focus on my shooting form in order to perfect my shot. As I got older, I took what I learned from playing basketball, especially when I got down on myself during tight games and feeling drained mentally, and I used that to better myself and my game. I felt frustrated whenever I missed my shots and I was told by my coach that I was going to have bad games and to aim to do better.

I started to see a change; the more I shot the ball, the more it went in. The game of basketball has helped me develop a positive attitude, good work ethic, leadership skills, and persistence.

From that day, I recalled those lessons and it made me even better and stronger. I now take from what I know to offer guidance to the freshmen on how to fix their game and make it better. Playing basketball, you have to have a positive attitude that allows you to play and affect the game in a good way. When you play basketball in that type of manner you start to make your shots your layups and etc. Also, when you start to miss shots and not be yourself on the basketball court, you get emotionally frustrated because your not doing good. Most importantly it takes you out your game mentally. I know that basketball can make you so emotional to the point where you want to cry.  There were plenty of times when I cried after being fouled out of a game going into the 3rd Quarter because I couldn’t play no more. I realized when you are playing good and it is one of your best games of the season, something can come along and mess things up. That’s why I tell the underclassmen to keep pushing, don’t get so down on yourself, push through, and keep fighting. For example, when playing basketball at your highest potential, you can score about 45 points. Next thing you know, the next game you play might only result in 10 points. You can become frustrated because you were expecting yourself to play in the same manner that you did in the last game. This is why I use the knowledge I know about basketball and tell the younger players how the game should go.

I’ve learned that working hard and possessing a good work ethic can separate you from others, while having talent without a good work ethic could only get you so far. One thing I know playing the game of basketball is having a lot of talent, having a good work ethic, and being or your team the longest will make you a leader on your team. When your a leader on your team you have the most important role on the team on and off the court. The most important part is being a leader to underclassmen. So if you have a team full of freshmen and sophomores you have to set the tone and an example for them. However, the leadership role is at its best when you and your team is in a tight game situation and your down one point and you have to pick up your team and guide them because you control the entire team.

To conclude, as I kept working on my basketball development I’ve developed my positive attitude, good work ethic, and leadership skills. The biggest experience in my life is the obstacles I went through of playing basketball. The lesson I learned is never play the game of basketball with an attitude.
