Personal Statement
Since the age of two I have aspired to be a basketball player. I would cry about everything when I was a baby, but when my father would watch basketball, I would stop and stare at the screen, transfixed. One of my first words was Chauncey, for Chauncey Billups. I would be a good candidate for a college team because I have good leadership skills. When there is an issue between two players I am always the first person to try and resolve it. I am the first player to try and develop chemistry on and off the court with my teammates.
Growing up I was always small, until my Sophomore year of high school, which meant that I had to work harder to play for any teams. I am the type of player who will spend 5 hours in the gym shooting the same shot repeatedly until it is fundamentally solid. I believe that practice and repetition will always create a better fundamental shot than just talent or pure natural ability. That is why I push myself every time in the gym, because practice and hard work will pay off.
I have always been a leader on the court, and when it comes to sports, I hit the books and learn anything I can about NBA, College or High School basketball. I am a true student of the game, whether it’s youtube videos breaking down the playbooks of NBA teams, or in depth videos on certain dribble moves or shot mechanics, I study everything, every chance I get. I believe that to beat someone, you have to study them, learn their game, so I always worked hard to be able to quickly adapt in a game setting.
I am willing to change to fit into the program I am with. I usually describe myself as a playmaking floor general with solid court vision and passing, however I can fill the roll of spot up shooter or a mid range closer. In character I believe I am different because I am a leader. If a teammate of mine is bothered by something, whether it be in their personal life or on the court, I am always the first person to listen and try and fix the situation.
However I am also a good team player, I collaborate with teammates and am willing to make sacrifices in my game to improve theirs. In academics I am different because I always perform well under pressure. Since elementary school I have been a good test taker, which is a hard skill to acquire. I believe that this has helped me obtain the elusive clutch gene that coaches and players seek in athletes.
Even though I spend a lot of my time in the gym working hard on my game, this process has been nothing but a blessing. Without basketball in my life I would be lost, and this sport gives me a reason to wake up every day. I eat, sleep and breathe this sport. I wouldn’t change anything about my experience with basketball.
