Personal Statement

My name is Kevin Callahan and I am currently a junior at Centereach High School in New York. My goal is to become a college basketball player at the highest competitive level possible in a college or university with a strong academic environment. I know the demands that this will require but I have a strong work ethic and I am willing to put in as much effort as required to achieve this goal.

I have been a high honors student since elementary school and currently challenge myself with honors, AP and college level classes. I am in both the National & Spanish Honor Societies and an active participant in many of my high school community service events. I believe that family, school and sports are the biggest factors in helping to make a person who they are. Balance is important but sports has been a huge influence on my life so far. I have always been an athlete and have played a number of sports both in and outside of school, including soccer at a Premier and ODP level, but my true passion is basketball.

In addition to being captain on my current high school team, I also play AAU, CYO and have been on several intramural teams. I am strength training several times a week, training with a private basketball coach, and practice with my varsity team during the summer and fall off-season in league play. I am a 6 foot point/shooting guard and can dribble equally well with both hands. I excel at seeing the whole floor, a skill developed running my soccer team from center D for many years. I have a good game situation IQ and know where my teammates are and where they need to go. I always have my head up looking for the best opportunities to advance the ball and score. I like to break off the defensive rebound and can attack and drive strongly to the rim and finish. I always look for the open man and will penetrate the lane to draw in defenders so I can dish to my teammates. Verbal communication is a critical component of the game but nonverbal communication that comes with playing with your teammates for many hours is even more important. I often take charges in a game, love to press and am a good outside shooter dropping 3’s when necessary.

I have another year and a half to improve my game.  I am going to work hard and hopefully will have the opportunity to play basketball at an excellent school both academically and athletically.

NCSA COLLEGE RECRUITING®

NCSA College Recruiting® (NCSA) is the nation’s leading collegiate recruiting source for more than 500,000 student-athletes and 42,000 college coaches. By taking advantage of this extensive network, more than 92 percent of NCSA verified athletes play at the college level. The network is available to high school student-athletes around the country through valued relationships with the NFLPA, FBU, NFCA and SPIRE. Each year, NCSA educates over 4 million athletes and their parents about the recruiting process through resources on its website, presentations of the critically-acclaimed seminar College Recruiting Simplified, and with Athletes Wanted, the book written by NCSA founder Chris Krause.
