When it comes to basketball, I not only play the game of basketball, but I also know and continue to learn the game of basketball. I have a strong basketball I.Q. because ever since I was little, I’ve watched it, asked questions and learned the game which contributes to my sharp basketball I.Q. I love everything about basketball and understand that you have to know the game to play the game, so you can respect the game. This helps me to become a strong team player to my team mates. When I play, I strive to learn different positions so I can be an all-around player and not just restricted to one position. I understand that basketball is about discipline, persistence and team work, both on and off the court.
For the 2015-2016 season, while being a sophomore, I played Junior Varsity and was the captain of the team. I played both guard positions, leading my team in scoring and steals, averaging 13.8 points and 2 steals per game. I really wanted to play Varsity this year but I knew it was necessary for me to prove myself to earn a spot on the Varsity team. So, I worked hard during the season by going to as many practices as I could, working extra hard during practices, applying the advice from my Junior and Varsity coaches and working out with the Varsity team to get better. This extra effort and dedication led to me being promoted late in the season to Varsity during our tournament run to the Final Four of the Ohio Division III State Championship. During the tournament, I pushed my team defensively and offensively by doing whatever I could to help the team win. This achievement shows my passion for the game to put in the work, never give up and to remain coachable to continue to grow my game, to help me and my entire team.
A couple of my strongest characteristics are being a fast learner and being able to connect with people. I use these skills to connect with my team members to help encourage them no matter if we are winning or losing a game or if we are in the classroom. I know this is very important to be a leader.
