Personal Statement

During my Junior season at York Prep Academy I was appointed Captain due to my efforts in my summer workouts and the leadership I displayed. We were able to take a program that won 3 games in 13-14, to a 20 win season in 14-15. I averaged 18 pts while having a 64% shooting percentage. I also hit 82 three’s with  44% average.  I averaged 6.6 rebounds and 2.9 assists. I also take great pride in being a two way player, and on many occasions asked to guard the teams best player.

I was ranked as the 10th Best Guard and 22nd Best Overall Player for my class in South Carolina. It is my plan to improve on that for next year. My trainers and coaches are all telling me my game is improving weekly and they are excited to watch me grow.
This summer was a whirlwind of activity between AAU, college visits and workouts and Elite College Camps and a little bout with cancer. I was diagnosis in May, had an operation in early June, and won Gatorade Player of the Camp at Gardner-Webb’s Elite camp at the end of June. Then 9 weeks of chemo and now back at being the best student/basketball player I can be.

I will be transferring to Teays Valley Christian in Scott Depot, WV to play my Senior season for Coach Ryan Arrowood.  This will give me an opportunity to train and compete against some of the best players and teams in the country.  Coach Arrowood had this to say about me after the recruitment process,

“Josh has a passion and feel for the game that is rare to find these days.  Whoever Josh chooses will be getting a skilled hard nosed player for 4 years."I originally noticed and started talking to Josh when I was an assistant at Hungtington Prep.  Josh was an obvious standout for what I wanted because of his skill set and attitude.  He will have a lasting impact on the TVCS basketball family and the program we are looking to build."– Ryan Arrowood

Academically, I am someone who also excels, I have a 4.10 GPA and I am only going to get better and smarter. I understand that I am a student first who plays basketball. I feel the work ethic in the classroom is indicative of my work ethic on the floor.

I am hearing from all types of schools, conferences and divisions including  Ivy,mid-majors, D-2 and NAIA. I take this process very seriously and am enjoying the journey along the way. I have no doubt that the right school with the right coach leading the right culture will see in me as much as I see in them and together we will do something special.

  • Subject: Josh Nork Follow Up from Workout Josh, Thanks for all of the kind words about our program! As I mentioned to you, it’s obvious you understand the heartbeat of our program. We have no doubt you will be successful in whatever you end up doing. One of the things that pops out on film and when you worked out with us is that you make players around you better. This takes many different forms and shapes, but that is a trait winning players have. You also have a natural feel for the game and are very skilled. The one thing I would focus on is staying in a stance on defense, especially when you are not guarding the ball. This can be challenging mentally to stay that engaged and focused, but you are a focused young man and I think that would improve your game. Frankly, that is something we have to remind many of our guys all four years they are in our program, so you are in good company:) We are continuing to pray for you as you begin treatments Josh! • #172 6’0 ’16 Josh Nork of York Prep (SC) Session 2 STANDOUT Josh made my list by making real basketball plays when I watched his team play. Nork swung the ball on offense. He rotated on defense. He communicated on both sides of the ball and played good defense vs big name players. He made shots too both going to the hole and at the 3, but it was the winning plays that stood out as I watched him compete.

  • #72 6' 2016 Josh Nork of York Prep (Rock Hill, SC) Josh is a very unselfish, fundamental player who knows how to compliment his team mates. Josh both passes the ball and moves without the ball very well. Josh’s Camp Coach Darriel Brown stated, “He has a consistent jump shot as well as makes great decision with the ball.” We have seen Josh take a step this summer and are eager to watch him continue to progress.

  • No. 68 6’0 ’16 Josh Nork of York Prep (SC) If we were passing out a Mr. Hustle Award, that award would easily go to Josh Nork. He is a high energy/full throttle approach to the game. He simply brings it every possession. Josh averaged right at 10 PPG and averaged more hustle points than any one player. Simply put, Josh is your model player. He has an excellent attitude and plays as a team player. The southpaw has a good midrange jumper with proper technique and mechanics. Currently, he is more of a combo guard, but will need to enhance his ball handling skills in the future, which will only elevate his stock.

  • A Special Work Ethic 6’0 ’16 Josh Nork of York Prep has to be one of the hardest working players I have watched in over twelve years of youth basketball. Josh has attended two of three of our Drills and Skills camp, but each time he has come away with “Camper of the Day.” What’s impressive about this award, the staff and players pick the winner and Josh has been the unanimous choice each time. Each Sunday, we go for 2-½ hour of non-stop action where we work on fundamentals and skill development. Each station lasts about ten minutes and no matter the station, Josh goes as hard as any player I’ve watched in my twelve years of doing camps. Josh takes personal pride in giving maximum effort 100% of the time. More importantly, he pays strict attention to details and is a perfectionist at execution. We always stress, “you play the way you practice” and I’m assured there can’t be many players that play any harder than Josh. While I have yet to physically watch Josh in a “live games,” that is irrelevant because I know he has a special kind of work ethic not seen in today’s youth. In addition, Josh is very vocal and always giving encouragement to his fellow campers. In speaking to Josh, he is always saying “yes sir and no sir” and never fails to tell you “thank you” at the end of camp. He is a high quality young man with a terrific work ethic that will take him far in the game of life.

  • D2 - LEFTY shooter. Always a tough thing to guard against. Has a High IQ and plays the PG spot well. Doesn't do things he's not capable of and plays within himself. His shooting ability gives him that dual threat that not all PG's have. Does a good job of moving without the ball. High energy! Drive to the rim well, good perpetrator. Needs to work on his strength and get in the weight room. On ball DEF must improve, getting stronger will allow him to play a more physical game on that end of the court. Needs to become more vocal, communicate with his teammates better.
