When I was in elementary school, I would make my 70 year old grandfather play basketball with me (or at least rebound for me) for hours at a time. I was the only third grader on my school's eighth basketball team, so I needed to make sure I worked as hard as I could every day. In fact, recently, my grandfather reminded me of the time when I was eight and I continued playing until I made 25 three-pointers in a row. Let's just say, it got dark. This competitive drive and obsession with the game has stuck with me. Since then, I have matured and reflect on those days with extreme fondness and appreciation for my grandfather. My love for the game, however, has only grown. Now I spend 4-5 hours at time by myself or with friends playing the game or practicing my shot.
My name is Zadan Mason and I am a 6'2 shooting guard for my high school Varsity team. My most relevant basketball accomplishments have been the 'player of the game' designations when they have been assigned. I do hope to be Captain next year.
What probably sets me apart is my academic qualifications. I had the opportunity to participate in numerous academic programs for students who tested well above grade level. This has resulted in me being the first student in my high school to take an AP class as a freshman - I took two (AP Calculus and AP Statistics). My hard work in school resulted in top ranking in my class. I have found a way to pay forward my opportunities by tutoring young kids through the Operation Dream program. What is most special to me is that they work with me on the academics, because I'm the only tutor willing to spend time with them on the court.
As a player, I posses the ability to make others around me better through my play making ability and court vision, in addition to being able to score the basketball myself. I also believe that my leadership skills make me more qualified to be a part of a collegiate team as I am able to encourage my teammates without being harsh or dominating. I also think that I have become a better mediator between two teammates and often am able to step in between of two arguing players.
I would be honored to attend a selective liberal arts college where I can make a contribution on the court and off the court. My current intended major is Ethics, Politics, & Economics.
