Personal Statement
Hello, my name is Shreyas Narayanan and I have had the opportunity to play golf since I was 7 years old. I started playing competively at the age of 10 and efficiently prioritize between my academics, golf and my other extracurricular activities. I have taken part in numerous tournaments under the auspices of JGANC, JTNC, and AJGA. From finishing last in my first tournament to the point where I won my third tournament, I have experienced the ups and downs of what golf has to offer. When I first started, I wanted to shoot low scores from the get-go, but that did not happen. I have learned that patience, persistence and a strong cerebral focus during the golf round is the best way to “beat” the course. Through many years of playing this game, I realize that a crucial component of success in golf depends on my mental approach.
People have commented on my unique swing in hitting the golf ball, saying that I dip my head too much on the downswing . I have tried to incorporate their feedback but I didn’t hit the ball as well when compared to my own original style. To this day, I stick to the motto, “Swing your swing” in my head and ask my coach for suggestions to be successful with my unique downswing.
I want to keep exploring my interests in STEM and hope to pursue a major in applied math. In addition to golf, I play the piano and sing classical music. I have completed Certificate of Merit Level 10 in piano and am now doing piano competitions like Panel (a California State Competition) and the Young Artists’ Guild. I am a tenor and I take private voice lessons to expand my vocal range and to focus on musical theater and the classics.
