The world is full of challenges. As an adolescent, I often hear others say, “I don’t know what to do with my life.” I think the better idea would be, “I have to make myself.” For me, life is whatever we make of it, and we are making ourselves every moment with every decision we make. That is why I believe the work we choose to do on a daily basis is crucial in shaping ourvalues and wellbeing. With this idea in mind, I have chosen activities in high school that are not only meaningful to me, but also hugely rewarding.
As a junior at Christian Brothers High School with a 4.0 GPA, I have been actively engaged not only with my school, but also the greater community. By serving as a member of the Sacramento Ronald McDonald Teen Council, participating in a summer internship at a dental office, and attending a summer program at Northwestern University in medicine, I am exploringand building a life that not only shapes who I am becoming, but also supports and gives back to others. Additionally, as an active member of my school community I recently created an Asian Cultural Alliance club and was chosen to represent my school in the community as a Lasallian Christian Brothers Ambassador.
One important area of my life that is both challenging and fulfilling is golf. As a child, my father introduced me to the game; however, my first choice sport, as a fast growing now 6’ 3” adolescent, was basketball. In spite of my love for the game, as a sophomore, I decided to shift to a sport that allowed me more time to focus on academics. I know this decision is right for me, as entrance into strong colleges grows more and more competitive each year. As a member of my golf team, during my sophomore year, my high school took 1st place at the Wolf Pack Invitational; I led the team in scoring. Over time, I have played in many tournaments: the West County Junior Tournament, Stockton Country Club Junior Tournament, and the Sacramento County Junior Tournament to name a few—always scoring in the top ten.
Today, my goal is to play golf in college while earning a degree in a STEM field—likely environmental science. As a high school student and athlete, I am dedicated to doing my very best. I am a patient, diligent, and flexible person—qualities necessary when playing golf, and I hope myfuture efforts, in a college program, will not only solidly strengthen the team chain, but also creates momentum that results in positive growth for all.
