Personal Statement

I am very happy to announce that I have committed to play golf for Loyola University of Chicago which will be in the Atlantic 10 conference beginning my freshman season. Go Ramblers.

Thank you to all the coaches who have visited my site and considered me for their program. It has been a  great experience and I am very appreciative of the  interest you have shown in me.

Charlie Kulwin

The most important thing I think I can say about myself is that I have a tremendous work ethic and I have relied upon it over the past 3 years to improve my golf game, my mental game and my academic performance. I have had a daily practice regimen both out on the range and on Trackman, where I closely watch all of my metrics (club speed, ball speed, smash factor etc.) to improve my performance. I also work out with a golf fitness instructor twice weekly and on my own other days. As a result, over the past 3 years, my golf game has improved from an 8 handicap at the beginning of my freshman year to its current .8 in tournament play; my first Junior Scoreboard ranking at the beginning of 2020  was around 700 for my 2022 graduating class and 3400  overall, while by the end of this summer season, I was ranked 288 for my graduating  class and  945 overall.  Meanwhile,  I have worked extremely hard at staying focused on the course, controlling my emotions and understanding the ups and downs of a round, a tournament and a season so that it influences my performance as little as possible.  In the end, I have played golf since I was 5. I have always loved the game and now, after hundreds of rounds, and all the ups and downs, there is still nothing  I'd rather be doing on any given day and nothing I want to master more.

Next, I think I would be the kind of teammate that would be a plus for any team. Having competed in both team play for the past 3 years, and in individual tournaments, I know how mentally difficult the game can be on a player. So, as captain of our team this year, I encourage everyone to stay positive, to not let a bad shot or a bad round get them down, to keep grinding it out no matter what, take pride at least in the effort if not the result and to know that if you keep working and keep trying, your game will improve and your scores will go down. Also, having been paired with my share of players who were at the time a lot better or worse than me, I have always prided myself on my sportsmanship toward my competitors and respect for the game regardless of how I played that day.

Finally, I know my academic performance is important. While it would be great to play pro golf, and I guess as with everyone playing at this level, it is something I am striving for, I know that excelling at school is critical to my future no matter where I land down the road. And here too, I have been improving each year and now, at one of the most selective high schools in the country, I have a 3.5+ unweighted GPA taking all honors and AP classes, up from 3.0 after my first freshman semester and something I believe will rise this year..

I  hope you will consider me for your team in the future. I think you will be getting a player who is rapidly improving, a student of the game, a supportive teammate and someone who will take care of his responsibilities on and off the course. Thank you.

Charlie Kulwin 2022.

  • Camp/Event
  • IHSA State Chsmpionship
  • 10/08/21 to 10/09/21
  • Shot 71/77. Course rating: 71/129. Finished 22/112. After being in top 10 following Round 1, my finish was disappointing. But getting to State was one of several 2021 goals I reached and my game is in a place where I think I can continue to make the same type of progress next season as I have in the past 3
  • Camp/Event
  • IHSA State Sectional
  • 10/04/21 to 10/04/21
  • I qualified to advance to the State Championship as an individual player with a 72. I left a few strokes out there but here I wanted to be sure to qualify so I played really conservative once I learned the cut looked like it would be 74. Very happy to achieve my goal for my final high school season of reaching the State finals.
  • Camp/Event
  • IHSA State Regional
  • 9/29/21 to 9/29/21
  • I tied for 4th with a +3 75 out of 40 players. I was tied for the lead going into 17 and hit a poor drive and a poor recovery shot, leading to a double. A disappointing result given my play to that point and my 2d place finish the year prior. But it was good enough to advance to sectionals and a chance to play for the state individual championship so I'll have a chance to improve and extend my high school career to one more event..
  • Camp/Event
  • Chicago Public School Championship
  • 9/26/21 to 9/26/21
  • I won this tournament by 7 strokes with a -1 71. This was my second City Individual championship in a row and a nice way to end my senior year of conference play. The wind was strong and scores pretty high given that the course is approximately 6100 yards. I certainly hoped to go lower but on the last few holes given my lead, I played pretty conservatively to protect our team lead and make sure our team also would win the City Championship, which we did.
  • Camp/Event
  • St. Rita Shootout
  • 9/11/21 to 9/11/21
  • I won this tournament with a -2 70. This was a high school invitational involving 16 high school teams from the Chicago metropolitan area. The course yardage was approximately 6600, rated 71.2/slope 126. There were several JGS rated players in the field so I felt good about playing good golf and winning .
  • Camp/Event
  • AJGA Randy Wise
  • 8/17/21 to 8/19/21
  • I shot 75/77/72. Finished 16. Course Rating /Slope 74.4/139. 6900+ yds. The course itself was not excessively hard but the greens were rock hard and it was tough to get close. Only 3 shot below par and even was 5th. I played fairly well beating or tying all but 1 better ranked Illinois player among several there. As always, there were more stroles out there to be had given my game.
  • Camp/Event
  • Payton/Jones Invite
  • 8/13/21 to 8/13/21
  • I finished second in this tournament with a -3 69. This was our high school team's invitational played in by approximately 16 high school teams from Chicago and the suburbs. Two missed birdie putts at the end cost me, but I played good golf. The course was approximately 6500+ yards with a rating of 71.3/slope 124.
  • Camp/Event
  • Chick Evans Invitational
  • 7/19/21 to 7/22/21
  • I shot 73/71 in stroke play. Finished T8 out of 90. I advanced to round of 16 in match play and advanced to semi finals 2 and 1. I lost there. Course 6910 yds. Rating 73.9/slope 139. This was an AJGA/Junior Golf Scoreboard sanctioned event in which almost all of the top Illinois Junior golfers played, including 2021 commits for N.C. State, Miami Ohio and Illinois Wesleyan. My drives were in or just off the fairway and I hit a larger percentage of greens. My putting was good but my wedges still need work. I had 5 birdies on the back 9 in Round 2 and 8 overall in stroke play. Next tournament: Randy Wise AJGA
  • Camp/Event
  • AJGA D.A. Points Junior Open
  • 7/13/21 to 7/15/21
  • I shot 73/67/72 and finished 6/48. Course: 72.3/132. 6810 yds. This was an AJGA and junior Golf scoreboard sanctioned event. My game was there in all 3 rounds but my irons and wedges were particularly sharp on Days 1-2. I was proud of my effort in my first AJGA tournament especialy given where I placed in a field filled with players higher ranked than myself on JGS.
  • Camp/Event
  • Players Challenge #5
  • 7/05/21 to 7/06/21
  • This was anAJGA/Junior Golf scoreboard sanctioned event. I shot 71/76. Course:69.7/6300 yds. I finished 11/71. I was scrambling on a number of holes but got up and down on Day 1 andbut could not find correction on Day 2 and missed several makeable putts.
  • Camp/Event
  • Illinois state Junior Amaateur
  • 6/29/21 to 7/01/21
  • I shot 77/77. CourseRating/slope 74.5/139. A lot of rain on Day1 and a slow start on Day 2. Missed the cut by 1 after missing final putt on 18 on day 2. This is a tough course but I left a lot of strokes out there.
  • Camp/Event
  • MAJGT at Countryside
  • 6/24/21 to 6/25/21
  • I finished 4th out of 70 with scores of 79/66. Course: Rating 72/slope 127.This was a Junior Scoreboard /AJGA sanctioned event. I got jammed on a couple of very difficult pin placements on Day 1, but bounced back on Day 2 to play my best golf of the season. While my entire game was clicking, I felt my course management played a big part in my success in Round 2.
  • Camp/Event
  • Players' Challenge at Highland Woods
  • 6/10/21 to 6/11/21
  • I won this tournament with rounds of 70/72. (I birdied the first hole in a 2 man playoff to win it). This was a Junior Scoreboard/AJGA sanctioned event. Course rating 71.6/Slope 122; 6500+ yds. I played well, hitting 24/28 fairways and 30 greens in regulation. My putting was very good on Day 1 and featured a 50 footer for birdie. On Day 2, I thought my putting was consistent with Day 1, but this day they weren't dropping. Fortunately, I also avoided bogeys most of the day as well. All told, I finished with 7 birdies over 2 days against 5 bogeys . It was pretty exciting to win back to back tournaments, especially with a playoff in the second one. It has boosted my confidence as well. I think I have a good chance to win my next tournament, which is a larger event on a more challenging course, since my game seems to be coming together and it will take place after I finally get out of school so I'll have a chance to practice a lot in the the days before the tournament instead of being in class for the first time this season.
  • Camp/Event
  • Blackberry Oaks Players Challenge
  • 6/01/21 to 6/02/21
  • I won this tournament with rounds of 72/72. This was a Junior Scoreboard/AJGA sanctioned event. Course rating 71.3/Slope 134; 6404 yds. I played well, hitting 10/14 fairways each day where most of the fairways were fairly narrow and had tall grass, trees and/or water often in play. I also hit 24 greens in regulation where the greens were relatively small. My putting remained an issue on Day 1 when I made three long putts (14-25 ft.) but missed 4 within 5 ft. Day 2 was better and an eagle on a par 5 offset a bad tee shot that led to a double on no, 2 that day. So I'm happy with the win and the overall play but know that when you have 7 birdies and an eagle over 2 days, as I did in this tournament, you have work to do.
  • Camp/Event
  • DuPage County Junior Classic
  • 5/15/21 to 5/16/21
  • Course 6630 yds. Rating 72.4/Slope 138. shot 79/80. This was a disappointing performance in a field of the best players in Illinois. There was nothing particular that led to my scores. I was consistent off the tee with excellent distance, exercised good course management and avoided any blow up holes (had no penalty strokes, only 2 doubles offset by 2 birdies in 36 holes.) It really was just poor wedge play and inconsistent putting. I left myself in a position to score on multiple occasions only to leave the wedge shot short or too far from the pin and then missed the par or birdie putt. While it is early in the season, I know I have work to do.
  • Camp/Event
  • Players Challenge/IJGA
  • 5/01/21 to 5/02/21
  • This was a Junior scoreboard /AJGA sanctioned event. I finished 4th out of 82. Course: Rating 72/slope 127. Scores 76/72. The wind on day 1 was between 20-25 m.p.h. most of the round. Despite the field having many players ranked in the top 25 all ages in Illinois, the scores were high due to the wind- I tied for 7th in Round 1 despite carding a 76. The wind during the second round calmed down a bit (15-20 with occasional stronger gusts) and many, but not all scores, came down and I climbed into 4th 1 stroke out of third. I led the field with 9 birdies over 2 days (4/5), which is great, but I need to eliminate the mistakes that offset those with unnecessary bogeys. My second day score was 1.12 below my current JSG differential and maybe lower if the sponsor seeks a higher rating due to the wind conditions on both days. Either way, I thought it was good start in my first tournament of the year.
  • Camp/Event
  • Illinois High School Association-Regional
  • 10/06/20 to 10/06/20
  • This was the state regional playoff fielding teams from 8 conferences with the players from the top two teams and the top 4 individual players not on those teams qualifying for the sectional playoff. I finished second of all players, shooting a 1 under 71-1 stroke behind the winner. The course laid out at 6250 with a rating 70.4, slope 124. Again not a super difficult course, but my play was very consistent and solid, hitting 13/14 fairways and 14/18 greens in regulation in windy conditions. I also was pleased that I beat several Junior scoreboard ranked players including two ranked significantly higher than me. Due to COVID, the sectional will be the last tournament of the high school season, against some highly ranked golfers on a what appears to be a more difficult course. I'm looking forward to it.
  • Camp/Event
  • City of Chicago Public School Championship
  • 10/04/20 to 10/04/20
  • This event was held at a local course that was short-approximately 6000+ yards-with a rating of 69. I finished first, winning the championship with a 2 under, 70. I was 5 under after 14 and got a bit unfocused knowing that I had a 7 shot lead at that point. I was happy to win since I lost it last year on the 17th hole with a double bogey. While the competition was not as strong as it would be in the tournaments in which I usually play, there were 4-6 Junior Scoreboard rated players in the field including last year's winner, a 2021 graduate ranked in the low 100s in his class and who has already committed to a DI mid-conference school. More importantly, I felt my play was solid with consistent length and accuracy from the tee, good distance control with my irons and and only 30 putts. I'm looking forward to Regionals and the Sectional where the course difficulty and level of competition increases.
  • Camp/Event
  • IHSA State Sectional
  • 10/04/20 to 10/04/20
  • I qualified as an individual player to advance to the IHSA State championship with a 72. course Rating 71/Slope 123. I played conservatively thinking that 77 would be the cut as it had been every year in the last several, but the wind didn't arrive until the last few holes of my round in one of the final groups, so top players ate up the course and the cut was 74. Left at least 3 strokes out here but achieved my goal for my final high school year, making it to State.
  • Camp/Event
  • Ilinois State Junior Championship/Mackray Memorial
  • 8/11/20 to 8/13/20
  • This was an invitational event for the best junior players in the state, ages 14-19, according to junior scoreboard ranking and finishing highly in prior years events. The winner was made fully exempt for AJGA events and AJGA stars were awarded as well for certain places. The course laid out at 6900 yds on Day 1 and slightly longer on Day 2, and was rated 74.5/139. I had a good round day 1 at 76 and was well within the mix to make the cut and finish in the top 15. Unfortunately, the course played harder Day 2 and, although all scores seemed to go up, my 81 was too high to qualify , missing it by 3. It was a disappointing end to what I think was a pretty good season, especially since a double on 17 before the Par 5 final hole that I had birdied the day before took me out of competition. I did learn where the gaps in my game are though by playing that course; I need better accuracy and consistency with my iron shots and I am focusing my practice on that daily now.
  • Camp/Event
  • IJGA Player of the Year
  • 8/03/20 to 8/03/20
  • This was a one day two round 36 hole AJGA sanctioned event by invitation only to the top 14-18 year old players for the 2020 tournament season. The course laid out at 6783 yds, rating 72.9/slope 134. I shot 73/73 and finished 11th out off 44 players. My game was really consistent and there wasn't much drama in either round. I got into trouble once and chipped in from well off the the green to save par. In the end, the difference came down again to not making enough putts. My putting was good, and I made 4 or 5 par or birdie putts from over 8 feet, but I missed a couple of shorter ones which led to bogeys or missed birdies. i feel like I am getting closer and feel good that I played well against many of the best players in the state. but know I still have to putt better to get to the next level.
  • Camp/Event
  • Ilinois PGA Open Last Chance Qualifier
  • 7/31/20 to 7/31/20
  • This was a one day qualifier sponsored by the Illinois PGA for both professional and amateur players of any age above 14. The course laid out at 6737 yards rating 71.7/123 slope. I shot 72 (even) but missed the cut by 2 strokes). (The full field was was reduced by 2/3 due to COVID , letting only 9 players per qualifier). My play stayed consistent throughout the round but a missed par putt and a missed birdie putt on 17/18 did me in. Again, I'm happy that my scoring is staying consistent.

  • Players Challenge/IJGA
  • 7/29/20 to 7/30/20
  • This was a Junior Golf Scoreboard sanctioned 36 hole event. the course laid out at 6603 yds. rating 71/128 slope. I shot 75/73 and finished 4th out of 59 players. My putting was off on Day 1, with several birdie putts circling and rimming out. Day 2 the wind was up, which is an advantage for me as, unlike most players I do well in windy conditions. At this point, I know I need to improve my overall shot/putting consistency to get my game to the next level of competition, but I am happy that my scores are at least consistently in the low to mid-70s.
  • Camp/Event
  • Chick Evans Jr. Am.
  • 7/20/20 to 7/21/20
  • This was an AJGA sanctioned IJGA event. Normally, 6 qualifiers are held to determine the field of 132. This year it was by invitation only to the top 64 golfers between 14-18 as ranked on the Junior Golf Scoreboard. The top 16 qualified for match play. The course laid out at 6814 yards, with a rating of 73.0/137 slope. The cut for match play was +4 for the two rounds. I shot 79/75. The course did not appear difficult to me but the scores of some of the highest ranked golfers in various classes were surprisingly high to me. Given that, I felt slightly better about my performance but obviously not satisfied, especially given that one hole in each round (16, round 1, 17, Round 2) kept me out. But , as I have learned, that is golf and the round is not over until all 18 holes are done. It was an honor to be invited and to compete against almost all of the best junior golfers in Illinois.

  • 7/16/20 to 7/17/20
  • This was a 36 hole AJGA sanctioned event for boys 14-18. The course was laid out at 6620 yards, rated 71.9/slope 132. I shot 72/74 and finished 24th out of 107. This was a very competitive event with most of the top Illinois juniors in attendance Again, I struck the ball well and my distance continues to remain at 300 off the tee. I was within reach on Day 1, but the field went on a tear, with the top 10 all being well below par. I left strokes out there but I am continuing to improve my consistency-just have to get more birdies.

I feel like my game is remaining consistent off the tee and tee to green. while my putting is consistent as well, I need to make more 8 feet+ putts to get to the next level of my game.

  • MAJGT at CGC
  • 7/01/20 to 7/02/20
  • This was a 36 hole AJGA sanctioned event for boys 14-18. The course was laid out art 6757 yards, rated 72/slope 127. I shot 79/74 and finished 16 out of 56 . It was a pretty straightforward course and I did not play my best Day 1. I was pleased with how I played Day 2 , but I left a lot of strokes out there, missing 9 birdie putts from 5-15 feet out all of which coming painfully close to dropping in. The 4 misses from under 8 ft. really hurt, but I was happy to sink a 25 footer for birdie right after a double on the back nine. Again, my ball striking was solid and my drives off the tee were consistently around 300 yds. So, more consistency day to day and work on putting.

  • MAJGT Boys Championship
  • 6/29/20 to 6/30/20
  • This was an AJGA sanctioned event for boys 14-18. I shot 77/78 and finished tied for 22 out 78 players. The course was a par 72 laid out at 6752 yards, rated 73/slope 135. I felt that I hit the ball well, consistently driving around 300 yards and largely on target. My results, which I obviously was disappointed in, I think were caused by somewhat overaggressive play on Day 1 (with 2 doubles and a bogey on the Par 5s offset by one eagle) and, on Day 2, just mediocre putting that allowed me only 1 birdie despite having 3-4 pretty good looks and 2 missed short par putts and a couple of just poor shots that led to a double and a bogey. I was pleased with the fact that one of the tour officials who has seen me play for some time now commented on how much my game has improved since last year and on my increased swing speed. But still plenty of work to do to improve. Another chance tomorrow and Thursday at the next MAJGT event.

  • This was an AJGA sanctioned event for boys 14-18. The course was 6600 plus yards with a course rating of 71.8 and 126 slope. I scored 74/73, or +3 for the 2 days/36 holes. I finished fourth and earned a PBE AJGA star. I actually shot 71 on Day 2-which would have put me in second place, but unfortunately I received a 2 shot penalty on 1T for having 15 clubs in my bag-something I saw immediately after hitting my drive and disclosed to the tour officials. That will never happen again! I felt it was a good performance for my first tournament of the year and given the difficulties I've had trying to play or practice between the COVID closings and the fact that I just got out of school yesterday.

I shot 75/73 and finished 4th out of 55 players. Day 1 my putting let me down as I had 7 putts rim out. Day 2, the wind was up and, as a result so were the scores. I actually enjoy playing on windy days so the wind was a slight advantage for me. this was my second top 5 finish (and 3rd top 10)this year and I am happy that my scores this season have been so consistent. I know I need to take the next step in my game but I feel like I am positioned well to do so in the coming months.

I shot 75/73 and finished 4th out of 55 players. Day 1 my putting was slightly off and I watched 7 putts roll around the rim and out. Day 2, the wind was up, which gave me a slight advantage since, unlike most players, I enjoy playing in the wind. My puttin also was much better and I capped it off by sinking a 20 foot birdie putt on the par 3 17th. I am happy about getting my second top 5 finish (and third top 10) and with the consistency of my game this season. I know I need to improve to get to the next level of competition but I think I'm positioned well to do so .

NCSA COLLEGE RECRUITING®

NCSA College Recruiting® (NCSA) is the nation’s leading collegiate recruiting source for more than 500,000 student-athletes and 42,000 college coaches. By taking advantage of this extensive network, more than 92 percent of NCSA verified athletes play at the college level. The network is available to high school student-athletes around the country through valued relationships with the NFLPA, FBU, NFCA and SPIRE. Each year, NCSA educates over 4 million athletes and their parents about the recruiting process through resources on its website, presentations of the critically-acclaimed seminar College Recruiting Simplified, and with Athletes Wanted, the book written by NCSA founder Chris Krause.
