Personal Statement

Hello coach I hope this email finds you very well, my name is Martin Schilkrut and I am very interested in becoming a member of the golf team at your prestigious University. I am a Junior golfer(class of 2021) from Chile and I have dedicated all my life to sports. My grandparents, my uncles, my mother have all gone to the Olympics at the sport of alpine skiing. I have pre qualified for the youth olympic game earlier this year but life can change drastically really fast. There is no doubt in me that I was born to be an athlete, I started playing golf by the age of 13, as a hobby, since we just moved to live in a new home at the golf course. 6 months later into golf I was already at a handicap 10 and won my first tournament in what you would call the Chilien AJGA, Golf Juniors de Chile (Golf Action). I skied for 7 months (3 months in Chile and 4 months all around Europe) and played golf for the remaining 5 of each year. Everyday afterschool I practice until you can't see the ball and I can say that in 4 years I have become pretty good at it. I have a handicap Index of 0.7 and a tournament average of 74.6 last year. My skiing resume is probably better than my golf one, I was at some point ranked 3rd in the World for the 2021 graduation year and have won a lot of important international ski races, but after having painful injuries and reflecting I decided that skiing is not the sport I want to pursue. Golf is incredibly complicated and that is my drive, I really understand the game and I have an amazing kinesthetic intelligence that has helped me become good at golf at a fast rate. Academically I am a good student, I have an unweighted 3.3 GPA (out of 4) with IB economics, mathematics, chemistry and biology. I have a 1430 in my practice SAT but due to the pandemic I have not been able to take the real one, when I do in December I should be in the 1400-1500 range. My biggest academic problem was my assistance, I went to Europe for 4 months every year to compete in skiing and missed a lot of school but worked incredibly hard to catch up with all my teachers and classes. I truly believe that I am the best candidate for your golf team, I will outwork anyone, and will always give my best. I learned to play golf by myself but Iam currently working with Felipe Aguilar, European tour winner, to be prepared for the important tournaments in November and December that I will compete in.
