Dear Coach,
My name is Walter Field, a sophomore at Camden Hills Regional High School in Rockport, Maine. From the age of two, I was drawn to athletics - playing a variety of sports throughout my early childhood - including baseball and tennis. At the conclusion of my High School freshman year I took up Golf, quit tennis, and played baseball in a minimal form while attending a golf camp in Scotland where I played competitive tournaments and trained with PGA Professionals. When at home during the summer, I practiced from sun-up to sun-down at my local courses. The hard work paid off: I dropped sixteen strokes from my scoring average, and qualified for the Maine High School Golf Championships. I plan on playing on both the NEPGA and Maine PGA Junior tours in the summer of 2024.
My commitment to playing golf at the collegiate level is all-consuming, and my drive to improve is in no way hindered by location. By that I mean, Golf in New England is not for the meek - the weather during our short six-month season will often range from a ninety-degree heat wave, to a hail storm in the low thirties (the later happened during one of my recent tournaments). Mud and rain plague the fairways and can create extremely challenging conditions. I’ve learned to surmount these hurdles with the help of dry towels, multiple coats and, most importantly, a positive attitude. As the Germans say, “Hope dies last!”
I’m a dedicated student-athlete . As a freshman I took all honors classes made available to me, as well as working in multiple clubs such as my school’s outreach club and chess team as a captain. I finished freshman year with a weighted GPA of 101.1/100, and will continue to challenge myself academically by taking multiple honors and AP classes as a sophomore.
Above everything, I see myself as a leader and team player in all that I endeavor. At the beginning of my sophomore season I was bestowed the honor of Captain by my coaches and teammates. The responsibility of such a role is not something I took lightly, and strove to support teammates and opponents alike, following our team motto as “being someone others want to play golf with.” Our 2023 team went on to receive our conference’s award for best sportsmanship. If there is one thing I can promise to a collegiate golf program, it is that I will be a dedicated member of the team, someone who will protect and respect everyone I am lucky enough to play alongside.
Thank you for your time and consideration, I hope we can have a conversation about my ability to contribute to your program in the near future.
