Details of my life:
My name is Moritz Tom Weigold, I am born 9th of May 2000 in Germany and I have a dream: To play College golf and playing on the tour. The United States is my 8th country and culture I have the pleasure to live in and I don’t want to miss this incredible experience. It might be also the reason why I am so interested to play an international and very demanding sport as I am very much used to go beyond my comfort zone. Due to the international profession of my dad, I grew up in very diverse cultures and I was educated in international schools around the world; I was exposed to European, Asian and now the US environments which was not always easy but I now feel very comfortable in managing new and unknown situations. I lived in Germany, Switzerland, Spain, China, Sweden, the Philippines, Singapore, back in Germany and now the United States. I was trying a number of different sports before I was intrigued by golf, the history, the players and the complexity of the sport. It is fascinating!
Golf, my real passion and inspiration:
Rather late with the age of 11 when we lived in Manila, I met Mike Que, a golf pro who very soon saw a talent in me. The way how he was teaching me was amazing and I fell in love with the challenges of that sport but I also realized that other kids who started much earlier had an advantage over me. I had to work very hard to catch up and I have dedicated a lot of my time to work on the driving range and the putting greens instead of playing video games like my school mates. That was not always easy but I have that dream. With the age of 13 I played my first junior tournament in Manila and I just loved it. At the age of 14 we moved to Singapore and I had to start over again with a new environment and a different coaching style. Much more was suddenly on my shoulders to continue learning the game as the coaches there were not inspiring me in the same way. I started to play tournaments in Singapore and Malaysia and learned a lot. During a vacation trip to Berlin, where we played at the Faldo course in Flesensee, one of the German national PGA coaches, Andre Zill scouted me on the driving range and brought me to golf training camp. We were immediately working well together, he gave me challenging tasks and I found solutions to them. He started to coach me from Germany in Singapore and when I turned 15 he invited me to come to Germany and to continue my education at an elite sport boarding school, to train intensively with him and to play for the man's team of Dresden in the 2. Bundesliga. It was a unique opportunity for me to intensify the coaching with him, to be supported by the golf association there and to gain experience in playing tournaments in Germany and Europe.
Road to amateur-pro golf:
The difficult part was to leave home at the age of 15, managing life in a boarding school on my own, organising the logistics of playing golf around Germany and to balancing my life as a teenager. I am proud that I was able to accomplish that part of my life well and there was one conversation which paved the way to the US. Andre Zill strongly recommended to aim for playing college golf in the US as he has other students who moved to the US and benefited a lot from it. The competition and challenges in the US are on a different level and if you want to prove yourself as a golfer, thats the place to do it. When my dad was offered a job in the United states I decided with my coach to join back the family in the US, use the opportunity to play high school golf and try to get into a good college to continue competing from there.
Arriving in the US:
I am in the United States since August 2017, I study at the Gill St. Bernard School as a junior in high school and the Hamilton Farm Golf Club environment provides a great training facility for my golf game. I am now trying to build a good understanding and network around golf in the US and I started to play junior PGA / IMG / AJGA and other tournaments in various states across the US as I need to build my track record and scores in the US system.
I am looking forward to study economics with a major in (sport) marketing at a college which also provides a great platform for golf so that I have a chance to compete and prove myself in the United States.
Carpe Diem, Moritz Weigold
