Personal Statement
Hello, I am Brincent Mitchell and I am currently a senior at East Forsyth High School in Kernersville, North Carolina. I have played on our school’s golf team since my freshman year. Additionally, I have lettered in golf each of those years. I feel it is important to note that I have only been playing the game seriously for about 3 years. Before then, I had been focusing on playing high levels of travel baseball. Baseball was my first love and my passion but now I know golf is my true love and this game is what I want to play and move forward with in my life. However, I also know that my grades in school come 1st and I always make sure to stay on top of my schoolwork.
I have overcome a lot. During my eighth grade year, I found out I had an infection in my hip, and was hospitalized for two weeks. I had to have two surgeries on my hip and pelvis during that time. When I was discharged I was told it would take at least six weeks for me to begin to walk on my own again. Around that six week time frame I began to realize I was not recovering like I should’ve been. I also noticed that my left leg was quite a bit shorter than my right. My mom noticed my spine had shifted left. I could not move without being in unbearable pain. My parents took me to a chiropractor that day. I found out all my life I had a week undeveloped bone at the base of my spine which had collapsed due to being unable to evenly shift my weight during recovery time. I went through 12 weeks of spinal adjustments, 6 weeks of physical therapy, endured a tremendous limp and was absent from school for eight weeks. After all of that and numerous follow-up appointments, I was cleared to play sports again. I was so excited and eager to get back to what I considered a normal life. I realized it wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. I struggled quite a bit. I felt like I had lost a part of myself (my abilities) during the time I was out sick and recovering. But I didn’t let that stop me! I was determined to turn my experience into a positive and not a negative. After a return to baseball in which I struggled tremendously athletically and emotionally, I faced a crossroads and a very important decision. It was then, I decided to truly focus on my golf game and do it to the best of my ability. I feel I have made enormous strides in a short period of time; consequently, my ceiling is extremely high.
Of course I don’t take hard work, focus, dedication and a positive attitude for granted, but my faith in Jesus allows me to see the positive in every negative and to push myself further as each day goes by. I can do absolutely nothing without Him! My relationship with Him is my motivator and has gotten me through every obstacle I’ve faced. I believe I can do all things because He strengthens me. So I keep pushing forward to achieve my dreams and one is to play golf professionally. I work with my swing coach frequently and I practice every day. I know that I have to maintain good grades whilst playing this sport which takes up a large amount of time. It is not easy, but I make sure that I have time to do all of my assignments, because that is my top priority.
