Personal Statement
To the scholarship committee:
My name is Garrett Starkey and I have had a passion for golf from an early age. I started playing golf as soon as I was able to hold a club. My dad was a huge influence on me while I was growing up because he taught me all the basics. Growing up I played multiple sports including baseball, basketball, and football and played all of these until I was starting my 9th grade year. It was at this point that I decided to focus on Golf only. I started playing in the US Kids league here in Oklahoma and from there I started playing in more competitive golf associations such as South Central and then the OJGT. Throughout the summers I enjoyed the competition and friendships I made and had success at every level. When I was old enough, I played in my first AJGA and placed top 10. All of this continued to strengthen my passion for the game and eventually started thinking about golf at the college level. I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by very talented players and coaches, and this was very helpful in building my confidence and love for the game. In addition to golf, I have been active in my church and have also had a part time job that involves refereeing youth basketball and football on the weekends.
Playing golf in college has been a goal of mine since I was very young and it is something that drives me to continue to work on my game year round. I worked hard to play for Edmond North High School and our team has won the 6A State Golf Championship 11 out of the past 12 years. Being surrounded by such talented older golfers and watching most of them get college golf scholarships was a huge motivation to me as a younger player. The work ethic and self discipline I was able to see was a great example what it takes to play at the next level. The chance to play a sport that I love and also be able to get an Education that will help me for the rest of my life is one of the main things that I desire. I also look forward to the new friendships and life experiences that playing on a college golf team can provide. I feel I have the self discipline and knowledge of how to be a team player and would love to have the opportunity to accomplish that life long goal.
