My name is Max Monette. I grew up in Banff, Alberta in the Canadian Rockies. I spent my childhood hiking, mountain biking, skiing, and skating on the beautiful lakes around Banff (https://youtu.be/reMO7CP-I6I). I played many sports like rugby, volleyball, and golf, but hockey has always been my passion. Now, I'm the captain of the Weyburn Red Wings in the Saskatchewan Jr. A Hockey League (https://www.sjhl.ca/sjhl-mandate)
On the ice, I am a “200-foot” fast-skating forward who centers our top line, takes key faceoffs, plays on the powerplay, and kills penalties.
Aside from my commitment to hockey, I prioritize academic excellence. I graduated from the Edge School for Athletes (https://edgeschool.com/discover/facts-highlights) in Calgary, Alberta with a 4.0 GPA.
- If you are looking for an ultra-competitive, mature student-athlete, with the proven capacity to push and grow through challenges, please contact me, or watch me play in 2023-24.
- Three qualities that make me a Valuable Player and Teammate.
- “Battle-tested”
- I faced challenges in my progression and fought through them. In the process, I gained maturity and confidence, and proved I am resilient:
-
- In 2019-20, I played my first major midget season with the Edge School U18 prep team in the Canadian Sport Schools Hockey League (https://www.csshl.ca/about). I started the season very strong and generated interest from Junior and D1 programs, but I fractured my elbow and missed 2 months of play.
-
- I worked hard to rehabilitate my elbow and came back healthy for my second U18 major midget season (2020-21). In this Covid year, we played only 6 games. I was named assistant captain and produced 1 point per game on average.
-
- For the 2021-22 season, I joined the Canmore Eagles of the Alberta Junior “A” Hockey League as an 18-year-old. I played 65 games as the 4th line center. A month into my second Junior “A” season (2022-23), I was traded from the Eagles to the Weyburn Red Wings in Saskatchewan.
-
- In Weyburn, I was given the opportunity to demonstrate my value. I played against the top line of other teams, took most key face-offs, and played hard minutes. Our team delivered one of the league's best records in the second half of the season to make the playoffs. I was awarded the Unsung Hero Award for my high-level and consistent defensive performance.
-
- This season (2023-24), I was honoured to be chosen captain by my teammates and coaches. I fill more of an offensive role. I center our first line which gives me the opportunity to play with skilled players. We complement each other, which drives our team’s success. I also play on our PP and PK and take key face-offs. As a result, I am amongst the leaders in points on our team.
- “200-foot” Player
- I have shown my versatility by excelling in both defensive and offensive roles in junior hockey. Coaches have compared my style of play to Patrice Bergeron and Dylan Larkin. I am a fast and agile skater. I have demonstrated a high hockey IQ and I am responsible in both the defensive and offensive zones and play with “smart aggressiveness”. I play center, but because of my speed, I also excel as a forechecking winger. Last season I won 58% of the face-offs that I took in Weyburn, and I am on a similar pace this season.
- Academic Excellence
- As a dedicated student-athlete. I graduated high school with a 4.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. This included achieving the Honour Roll with distinction in grade 12 (2020-21) and grade 11 (2019-20) and Honour Roll status in grade 10.
