Personal Statement
I first became interested in the sport of hockey while watching the Stanley Cup final with my friend in 2012. Until that day, I had never skated on ice. My mother noticed that I spent a lot of time roller blading and encouraged me to try hockey. I fell in love with the sport and knew right away I wanted to be a goalie. I was 13 years old when I joined my first house league. My goalie skills and understanding of the game were way behind the skill level of most of the kids my age. I quickly realized the importance of the team playing in front of me and made sure to support and encourage my teammates so that our team would improve. This team mentality has been a big part of why I keep getting better. The encouragement I get from my teammates makes me more determined to do my job well.
Starting hockey at a late age motivated me to spend a lot of time watching the game, studying plays and practicing on and off the ice to develop my skills and muscles so I could make my high school hockey team as a freshman. I'm thankful that my parents supported me with this. Since I was still fairly new to the sport, I listened and learned from the constructive criticism that my coaches gave me, so I could keep moving to a higher level. I was always willing to try new techniques that would help me get better.
This year I plan to increase my GPA and SAT scores before graduating from high school. I plan to continue to work hard to develop my academic and athletic skills. I look forward to finding a college that fits me both academically, as well as athletically. With my dedication and desire to work hard, I hope to find a hockey coach that recognizes my ability to learn quickly and will push me beyond my comfort zone so that I can continue to improve. I have a positive attitude and don't get discouraged when I make mistakes. I try to learn from them and have fun while correcting my errors. I have definitely learned that I can accomplish anything I set my mind to and truly love the game of hockey.
