Personal Statement

My goal is to play college hockey and/or lacrosse where I can continue to develop my skills and education and where I can add to a team to help make it stronger. I want to pursue a degree in chemistry and potentially work in the pharmaceutical industry.

I am very serious about the sports I play which include ice hockey, lacrosse and cross country. It's fun to play but it also requires hard work,  good sportsmanship, and commitment. I can always learn from other players, coaches, and opponents. When I see an opportunity to help others on my own team or on younger teams develop, I step up because I learn from those experiences too, help make my team stronger, and help other younger players develop.

I am invited to fill in for teams in many spring, summer and men's leagues and have had the opportunity to play for strong teams and rebuilding teams. I am honored every time I'm invited to help because those teams and coaches believe that I can help but also know they can count on me. My freshman year of high school hockey was the most challenging for me. The team (Nashua High School North) was part of a co-op with another high school and there are no cuts and it's all varsity, D1 so we had 4 goalies - a senior, a junior, and two freshman including myself. The other freshman goalie and I started most games and shared some with the senior. When coach announced that I would be the starting goalie for the varsity team, ahead of older players, I had to quickly learn how to respectfully and humbly work with the other goalies on the ice knowing some were feeling negatively. The team had only won 1 game in each of the past two seasons. When our local sports writer mentioned me as one of the up and coming players, and later awarded me as a runner up for the area all-stars, I was surprised but proud too. We ended up winning four games this past season and I was proud to be in net for those games. I have had my share of rough games too and I know it's at those times that character is also tested.

I transferred to a new high school as a Sophomore at Bishop Guertin High School in Nashua. I was the starting goalie for the JV team and the swing goalie for Varsity. I have been the starting goalie for our Varsity team since Junior year.

I earned a spot on our Varsity Lacrosse team last season on the 4th line. I was also offered the opportunity to start on JV, playing every game. I knew I wouldn't see as much game time if I played on Varsity but I chose that direction instead because I wanted to play with guys who were better so I could push myself to improve and be a valuable asset to our practices. Over the season, I received great feedback from the coaches about my effort and improvement and, this year, will be one of the top defensemen on the Varsity team.

Lastly, I also ran as a member of the Varsity Cross Country team this season while also playing club ice hockey, participating in an internship, holding a part time job, and maintaining my grades at school. It has been incredibly challenging but I am proud of these successes that I have worked for.

Personal growth, supporting and developing others, and good character and leadership are my goals and aspirations.

  • The area’s top pro, college, junior, high school, prep and youth hockey goalies choose Mike Buckley for the proven success of his systematic approach to goaltending. Coach Buckley's system fits into all players' games, at all levels. The GDS system is a thoroughly mapped out set of principles and variables that lays the groundwork of the goaltender's game. The system builds on the six core fundamentals of goaltending: Skating, stance, positioning, save selection, rebound control and recovery. GDS coaching creates a strong technical base complemented by a focus on an athletic, unbounded style of play. This allows goaltenders to develop their own style based on their strengths, resulting in quick efficient movements and confidence in their game. In addition to being president of GDS, Coach Buckley is also the head goaltending coach for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and director of goaltending for Pro Ambitions Hockey, where his curriculum is taught across the country at more than 120 locations. Mike Buckley has helped develop 4 Stanley Cup winning goaltenders in the past 8 years, along with becoming the first U.S. born goaltending coach to win the Stanley Cup in 2016, and a second time in 2017. GDS also provides goaltending consulting to sports management groups, NHL scouts, top prep schools, junior teams and youth hockey organizations including Top Gun, Lovell Advantage, NE Generals, KPW Youth Hockey, North Attleboro Youth Hockey, Assabett Valley Girls, , Manchester Monarchs, NH Avalanche, Seacoast Spartans, Seacoast Lightning, Manchester Flames, Masco Youth Hockey and Methuen Youth Hockey. Mike Buckley is also on the Goalie Advisory Staff for Reebok/CCM.
