Personal Statement

My name is Zach Auger.  I have been playing hockey since I was 5 years old.  I made the switch from wing to defense in major peewee.  For several seasons I played both positions as needed.  I am a now strong,  defenceman who moves the puck well in all three zones of the rink.  I am a very mobile and quick skater and am able to create scoring chances for myself and my teammates.   My friends and teammates see me as a very hard worker and very determined to achieve my goals.

During the offseason, I work on my strength, speed, and agility 5 days per week.  I was lucky to workout in a group with NHL, major junior and NCAA  D1 players who helped to show me what it takes to make it to the next level.  I was on the ice 3 times per week during the summer, working on skating and shooting with Pro Skaters Inc. and Tim Turk Hockey.  I also play competitive rugby which helps with cross-training.

This year (2018-19)  I was lucky to have offers from a number of CCHL Tier 2 teams.  I chose to play with the CharLan Rebels, where I was affiliated last season.  Our season recently ended in the second round of the playoffs.  I enjoyed significant ice time all season, including PP and PK, as well during the 3 on 3 overtime. At the end of season award banquet I was honored to receive the Shandland Trophy for Sportsmanship and Playing Ability.

School is a very high priority for me and I take pride in my work.  I attend Ashbury College where I am pursuing a bilingual diploma.  This diploma requires that I take a significant number of credits in French.  I am fluently bilingual.  I am also taking a number of IB courses to push myself.  Last year I achieved an 88% overall.  My grade average in December 2018 and in March 2019 was 92%.

I aspire to attend a US college and play hockey.   My first choice would be to attend a school in the eastern U.S.  I am from Ottawa, Ontario which is closer to the east coast.  The hockey culture is strong there and I would be closer to my family.  However, I am looking for the best overall opportunity for school and hockey.  Ultimately, I am looking for a fit regardless of location.

Thank you for reading my statement.  I look forward to hearing from you.
