Personal Statement
My name is Dylan Nauhaus and I am a 2005 junior at Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I play on the Prep Team which competes in the Midwest Prep Hockey League. My biggest ambition in life is to play D1 hockey, learn everything I can during my college career and use it all to make a positive impact on the world.
On (and off) the ice, I am a game changer, hard-core competitor, creative problem solver, and a selfless teammate who will do whatever it takes to accomplish what is best for the team. I am 6' tall, 180 pounds, and an extremely fast, agile, defenseman who works well in transition and has an excellent hockey IQ. My work ethic is unbeatable and I am relentless in both the defensive and offensive zones to make things happen. Coaches depend on me to create momentum shifts and put me in at clutch moments because of the impact I have proven I can make. I am tirelessly focused on protecting my house on one end of the ice…while on the other end, I am known for being being a playmaker and being able to set-up scoring opportunities for my teammates, and myself, to win games. I have the mindset and endless willpower to overcome any obstacle and I always lead by example.
Probably the most important quality I bring to any team is my resiliency. One of my favorite quotes is by Gregg Popovich who said, “The measure of who we are is how we react to something that doesn’t go our way.” I think that quote resonates with me so much because it’s what we deal with every day on the ice: turnovers, goals scored against, bad passes, long shifts, etc. Challenges are part of every game, and a regular part of life, but our ability to bounce back, adapt, and learn on the fly can turn a seemingly bleak situation into a winning one. I believe in myself and my teammates and I know that I can ultimately lead us to a ‘W’ by changing the mindsets of those around me and converting the inevitable challenges into opportunities.
Statistics:
In the 2022-2023 season, I had 27 points in 33 games out-of-league play, and 8 points in 18 games in the MPHL which led all Defensemen.
Despite a few injuries that sidelined me for a period of time during the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 seasons, I had a total of 65 assists in 75 games. I was third on my team for assists and top 5 +/- with a +30. I also received the “Playmaker” award from my league for having 3+ assists in a game. I also was a Captain for the team.
I made the top team my freshman year (2020-2021) at Shady Side Academy, the Prep Team, but because there were many older defensemen already on the team, I played both winger and center. I worked my way up to a spot on the second line as well as a spot on the PP and PK. The season was short due to COVID but I finished top 5 on my team with 5 assists and 5 goals in 23 games.
